Anyone know about old stereos/turntables??

  1. Bit of a long shot but I'm running out of places to ask/look

My mum was going to get rid of her old 1970's Telefunken stereo but I was horrified and told her to give it to me as I'd always loved it. It doesn't go with the flat at all but it's so quirky and lovely that it now belongs. However, the head has snapped off of the record player arm and also when it automatically ends a record the arm goes back but won't set back down and the turntable won't stop.

Does anyone have any idea where I might find a manual for this old thing, I'm completely stumped. If push comes to shove I'll just have to lug it to a repair shop somewhereI suppose.

Does it have a model name or number?

I collect old Vinyl and have a Decca turntable :) but.... I dont know how to fix your prob. I would suggest getting a new stylus after looking up the model number from ebay.

  5. You might have some luck on flea bay - have a look under "vintage audio". Tidy looking Telefunken, but not actually worth that much.

  6. It's a Telefunken Rondo Stereo 101. Apparently they're very rare over here, mainly in Germany now. Ebay just brings up random stuff :(

I think you can see in the picture that the head is hanging off pathetically so I imagine I'll have to glue it as I can't really see these being sold anywhere!!

Thanks TP - I do love it and it plays the radio so loud for such an old machine :)

  7. A mint one on ebay just sold for £999 which is mad! Mind you, I'm not interested in selling it, I just want to help it :(

  8. Blast from the past I used to take these things apart when I was a kid! DO NOT chuck it! Vinyl never died it just went a little quiet and its back big stylie now!
Right the head on those and similar BSR (British make) units , it just moulded plastic and normally a screw underneath the alloy arm that holds it in. The easiest fix is:
    • Unplug from mains
    • Remove stylus from the head (carefully - it normally a twist and clip out job)
    • Carefully lift the arm up and try to see if there is a screw underneath? If there is unscrew it - gently.
    • Once this is removed you should see the remains of the broken plastic inside.
    • These are usually ABS plastic so buy some ABS Plastic glue (or superglue) but check its suitable. Take the broken bit and see how it lines up with the other end on the head. Reglue the broken bit - hold both together for the glue to set a little. Then leave on one side (Head propped up on something like a matchbox or anything to take the stress off the tiny wires underneath. Leave it over night.
    • Next day refit the whole unit ensuring the plastic lines up with the hole in the arm where the screw goes. Replace screw do not overtighten and that should be ok for another 20 years (but be delicate and treat it well.) Replace stylus.

Most issues with not automatically stopping the player after the arm comes to its rest are down to dust, dirty switches or the mechanism underneath needs a clean and regreasing. Its probably bone dry underneath?
These were designed to be serviced and hence if you turn the whole thing upside down (be careful to lock the arm in position first) you should see screws. Once removed you can see the mechanism underneath. A very light greasing with Vaseline or similar should do the trick - they are superb dust collection devices btw!

Ideally a few more pictures of the head/arm join etc might be useful?

Good luck with it take your time and PM me if you get stuck.

Mmmm I never knew so many people where interested in vinyl on here... I know I will start a thread.

  10. ah sorry i couldn't really see the pic that close on my phone... wow its def worth getting it repaired... :) little beauty you have there :) x

  11. Stan you are the man!!!!! :D

I'll have a butchers when I get in and let you know what's what. Funnily enough someone did mention it might be dry underneath and to be fair it's been lumped in my parents loft for about 20 years and before that I doubt they were much into maintenance :D

    Thank you so much!!

  12. Like I said Vinyl never died in spite of what people try to tell you about CD's andng MP3 downloads! Daft thing is for the sake of convenience we have poorer quality sound from MP3 than a 78!!
Some bands only release on vinyl now anyway (they are just trying to be posey of course but its good to still see vinyl) I still have all of mine from day 1 and it travels with me when we move house (yes its a pain - litterally but its part of your life.);)

  13. That is just crazy - whoever bought it was nuts. You can get something with a classy SME arm on for less than that. Normally the "radiogram" style stuff doesn't sell for much. BSR or Garrard decks weren't that hot.

Vinyl does still live - I've got a fine Rega deck in the living room. I've also got two PYE "Black Boxes" waiting to be restored in the garage, a nice bit of valve kit :) (perfect for 78s).

I love that record player! Very cool.

  15. Cheers HF :p

  16. Good point. There's a whole generation that's never heard good quality sound; they've only ever heard compressed, "lossy" audio. CDs are fine, as they're straight PCM, so everything's still there.
