  7. Welcome from West Lancashire - looks a good sound bus if the underside is as good as the exterior.

  8. Just driven him home and the inside smells of fuel. Not sure if it's just the classic car smell or if something more sinister is going on...

It's not a classic car smell.
Check all the fuel lines, it's probably worth doing anyway unless you know they've been done recently.

Breather pipes. If your lucky its not the ones hidden behind the firewall :)

    This too.
Quite likely the breather that gets missed. It's up behind the spare wheel well. Take the rear light cluster out to make it easy on yourself!

  13. Was that the first time you had drove it? If not did it smell before? You hadn't by chance just filled up with fuel?

It's most probably breathers but a bit more info would assist, if you have been driving round for weeks with no smell & suddenly it smells I would check for leaks but if you have just filled up then it will be your filler pip but if you also brimmed it then fuel can sometimes travel along the vent pipes so a few options hence the more info question!

    P.S. Welcome aboard

  14. This was the first time I had ever driven it.

I had just filled him right up with fuel, I am used to driving a more modern car and wasn't sure if the fuel smell was normal. It was quite strong, I was worried after reading the forum about perished breather hoses.

  15. Have you checked in the noisy cupboard and underneath to firstly ensure your not leaking!

There's a good chance you have just overfilled it but you will probably find that the filler pipe & breathers will need replacing! I would do the breathers anyway and investigate the filler pipe!

Also whilst your at it swap out all of the fuel pipes with new just so you know it's been done!

  16. No, didn't have time unfortunately. Had to put down the new toy and head off for a nightshift.

Is breather hose easy to get hold of and is it a fairly easy task to take on?

I don't fancy having to get the engine out to replace the filler pipe.

  17. Breather hoses are just short pieces of fuel pipe joining lengths of metal pipe, there's plenty of diagrams on here just do a search!

Just ensure you have no leaks first!

  18. Perfect. Thanks mate. Is it easy to lay your hands on? Halfords?

  19. I never use halfrauds mate, check out the more specialist VW suppliers online, some give a bit of discount for forum members!
