Has anyone ever done this? I have and am about to amaze you with my results! They sometimes change as they get new ‘markers’ in.

Apparently it comes down to DNA being measured against a panel of folks who have deep roots to one particular area.

I’ve done mine with Ancestry. It’s correct to an extent but our family history goes back to Romania. They fail to find dna for that.

I am impressed with the Dane connection, we could be related to Ragnor Lothbrook

We should all club together and get @Barry Haynes DNA done….let’s see if his half Yorkshire claim is true.

Their data becomes more refined each year and if you look at how they sample - they miss countries they haven't sold any test kits in.

I did 23andme around 4 years ago - I am a Nigel Farage wet dream - I really should got and get that Bulldog wearing a Union Jack t shirt tattoo.

It is interesting. One of friends had a hazy background but said the family stories had been that there were pirates and raiders in the distant past. Her DNA results were awesome and appeared to back up the family stories. There was a lot of different DNA matches from East coast Africa and Southern Europe

As I mentioned earlier - 23andme is governed by who actually buys and populates the product itself - it relies on me for example fully populating my data, then links DNA strands and makes predictions finds results from user profiles.

The fewer users in an areas - the bigger the black hole.

I assume its not seeing Wales as its American and they never pushed it hard here - so very few people in Wales have populated a profile - whereas my Dad was Irish, it being an American product, its lit up like a Christmas tree with Irish relatives.

Its got a new feature since the last time I used it - you can build a family tree with the bits you know - so I assume the more people do that, the more accurate it is.

Not sure how Ancestry works - I assume its alone the same lines - each relies on peoples profiles and will improve over time.

My mother had her tree traced back, in 1977, when it was the ‘in thing’ to do.
    Her maiden name was Uphill.
Her 5th great grandfather founded the village of Uphill just outside of Weston Super Mare, but her ancestors go back to 1411.
I’m a descendent of the Sheriff of Wiltshire, apparently.
My fathers name only goes back as far as his dad, or so we can find.
However, there’s a map of Frome from 1749 which shows a road called Portland Road as our surname, which we havnt worked out why. We think it was changed, as Lord Bath of Longleat, who owned a vast amount of the land around here, gifted us a part of land, into the town centre to make access easier. It’s know as Bath Street.
The original ways in were Catherine Hill and Gentle Street ( featured in the tv series Poldark, where the pub The Red Lion scene was shot).

  11. Lot of Potteries there. Do you address everyone as "Dook"?

Did my Ancestry. Bit of Irish, bit of Scottish, hardly any English. Mostly Scandinavian, which may explain the tall ganglyness.

There doesn’t appear to be a “Yorkshire” category………and on that basis, I’m out!

  13. Surely true Yorkshire folk wouldn't pay for a DNA test? D'you think they're made of money? By 'eck

Incidentally, Catherine Hill here, has a street at the top called Badcox.
The local joke is “Why was Catherine Hill?”
    “Because of ……” ;)

My aunt has been looking at our family tree, which is quite tricky considering a lot of records for Northern Ireland got destroyed in a fire.
Some of my ancestors were pirates and smugglers. Most excellent
