I've just got my first campervan - a 1975 LHD Californian import with the 1800cc Type 4 engine. However, I'm having some problems starting it! With the key in the ignition it turns fine to the first stop, and all the appropriate dashboard lights come on - but when I move it to the 'start' position nothing happens. I thought it might be the switch so replaced that - but the same fault has occurred. Fitting the old switch to the ignition harness and turning it manually (with a screwdriver) - everything works as it should - but I don't really want to stay with this lash-up! I'm guessing that the ignition barrel is not engaging properly or is not turning for the last part of its movement and hence is not operating the switch. Anyone come across anything like this before? I really don't want to have to replace the ignition barrel as that looks a real pain to do ...
Yes I had the same problem once. There was something on the switch preventing the key part of the switch from turning far enough. I can't remember what it was but don't remember having to remove the barrel to file it down.
Dear All, Many thanks for the advice - I tackled the problem on Sunday - and it was the actual ignition barrel! Both the original switch and the replacement work fine - but the internal mechanism of the barrel had jammed for some reason. I found replacing of the barrel relatively straightforward once I was confident enough to drill into the casing that held it to get access to the retaining spring. Anyway - it now works perfectly - so onto the next thing that needs sorting (I wonder what I ever did with my weekends before I got the van...) Best wishes to all! Neville
PS - thanks for the welcome as well - and once I've worked out how to add karma you'll all be getting some!
