I can't believe there are hosepipe bans in still in place after all this rain. Does anyone have anything to say on the matter?

Plenty of water in Notts, we have yet to get a hosepipe ban. The water peeps are sharing some from the Trent to help replenish other rivers

  6. oh no .... not this again.

the rain we are experiencing now has no effect on the 2-3 years of dry winters which meant that the levels in the reservoirs are very low. hence the pipe ban.

if people really are worried about not being able to use their hosepipes - i suggest they get waterbutts in their gardens and collect and store the rain we currently have.

90% of the rain we have had this month wont make it into the ground water levels as the ground is too dry to absorb it ....

i am so fed up with people making this comment ...... sorry - but it angers me.

  7. I have a water butt as well, wish I had two as we've had so much rain here. The sun is out today which makes a nice change!

  8. So where does it go then? (honest question)

  9. I guess the top layers soak it all up rather than it getting through to lower levels.

  11. I don't get it, how does last winters dry spell affect this years rain again? It always raining here so i'm not sure what a hosepipe ban would mean to us

  13. I have installed the plumbing for several new build houses with rain water harvesters . I have had to go back to re connect mains water as they can't collect enough water for their needs.

Although the harvesters only supply water for flushing toilets and other non drinking water needs.
These customers have been running out of water!

    I blame Marowak!

  14. It would have to be a deep hole, my garden is a quagmire.

About time the government starting thinking about alternative storage plans then if it's the backlash from multiple 'dry' winters. Funny how country's like Cyrus manage with little rainfall.

bet you would get less of a spade depth of quagmire.

The issue is if you look at how many houses have been built in the last 40years and how many reservoirs have been built (In the SE we have filled some in to build houses on)

Something like 75% of our water comes from underground bore holes and this rain is not getting there its just running on the surface to the sea

  16. Matt - are you just winding me up like a toy?

  17. It's the wrong type of rain! ;)

The problem is that we've had relatively low rainfall for 4 or 5 years now, and there's too many people in the south east using too much water. It'll take years for the aquifers and reservoirs to re-fill. I think we'll have to start thinking of water as more of a finite resource, that or pay for a pipeline from Wales.

  18. Or come up with a solution instead of all this 'shut up and put up' mentality this country seems to be in

  19. We are surrounded by the stuff , all our rivers end up in the sea, its water management that needs looking at, they had a chap from southern water on TV other night saying how their wasnt enough water, so reporter said so you wont be able to provide it to these 6000 plus new houses they are building near ashford and all over then , he said oh we will   When asked where he /they would get it from he couldnt anwer. They are happy to take water rates and income for new houses but dont provide the infastructure to profide the water!! when it rains hard the pipework cant cope because its trying to deal with the houses water and so it floods and we dont even collect it!!Plus all those ice caps are melting dont forget and sea levels are rising we need to get drinking it before we are all drowned lol.
