I've played with the idea my self and being an ac engineer it helps lol but I very rarely deal with car ac stuff and I dont think it will look right with a massive condenser on my roof lol

The best thing to do is what others have said find a modern car and get the bits out of that but I do think it's a bit of a waste of time as It will take a fair bit of power from a air cooled engine and you need to find a good place for the evaporator were you would get best air flow plus all the other bits , but it's your choice so have crack at it

Same here, I really dont get this aircon in a bus thing, its an american thing for driving in california, well if your lucky enough to actually be in your bus when its hot the last thing i wanna do is cool it down, coz your most probabbly chugging around at 50mph just open a window and enjoy your bus in the sun

Same here, I really dont get this aircon in a bus thing, its an american thing for driving in california, well if your lucky enough to actually be in your bus when its hot the last thing i wanna do is cool it down, coz your most probabbly chugging around at 50mph just open a window and enjoy your bus in the sun

California. Ha! Utopia. Try Texas. I'd give my left one for functioning aircon.
The majority of our Summer has been over 100* F (38*C) with several days around 106* (41*C) .
As if that was not bad enough, southern Texas is a swampy bayou, with swarming mosquitoes, alligators and insects that can blind you. Our humidity is often around 90%. There is no breeze. The second you step outside, the air just clings to you and starts humping your leg.
I miss working on my bus. I haven't been able to so much as dust the dash since May. It's that hot.
To experience Houston weather, set your oven at Warm. Place a pot of boiling water inside. Wait ten minutes. Open oven and stick your head in it. If you close your eyes and concentrate, you will almost hear the ignorant whooping rednecks. It might sound like, "yee-hawwww! President Bush was the greatest! Dang my sister has nice titties.".

Oh hey, you may not have even heard of the old "swamp coolers" they used to hang in car windows 60+ years ago, before aircon was invented. They operate on wind and water and supposedly dropped the inside temperature by as much as 20*. They sell for 200-300 dollars at VW shows along with the old 50's Coke coolers and other vintage nuggets.

I never got those coolers in hot 'n humid conditions. I mean, there's enough moisture in the air, why would you want to go and saturate it further? I hate humidity. My brother lived in S.Carolina and I hated visiting him. When he moved to Phoenix, Arizona it was way more comfortable. Hot, yes but I'd rather have moisture sucked from me than poured on me. Mind you, had to drink bucket loads

Well, the technical term for them is Evaporative Coolers. Evaporation always causes a drop in temperature. People who have swamp coolers swear they help, but you are right. If the moisture isn't drawn out of the air, I don't see how they could be very helpful. Even if the temperature inside the car drops 20*, now the swamp cooler has added even more humidity.
I once made one of those tent air conditioners you see all over youtube. I put a fan and a vent in the lid of a cooler full of ice. It blew ice cold air from the vent. After some time, the tent did feel a tiny bit cooler, but it was so humid I could barely breathe. I half expected it to begin raining inside the tent.
Maybe these types of coolers work better in dryer climates, where it isn't already humid to start with.

My bus does have all the cut outs and pipe work in it but not the condensor .As baywatcher says ,did some investigation into buying parts on Samba.com to get it all working but just not worth it as it saps a lot of power from the engine for not alot of gain of cooling. . Just open the windows.
