Having returned to contact points after electronic ignition, I wondered at a way to improve their setting. Virtually impossible to set without first removing the distributor, they often change over time. Wouldn't it be possible for a distributor to have an external "thumbwheel" to fine-tune the gap/dwell angle.....
That would be far too easy . No real alternative to removing the dissy, in my experience. Just set the gap, no need to bother measuring dwell. I'd go back to electronic, if I were you...
Had a Pertronic Ignitor for some time, before the wires wore through. Then a SVDA 034 electronic distributor which didn't last long, even after the electronics were replaced under guarantee. They said the pod sometimes didn't earth properly, but by then I'd lost confidence. Have been getting 28 mpg on a long sub 60mph run with points, so don't see any need to return to the "high tech" stuff
in the olden times there were thumbwheels on the vacuum advance unit on the distributor, this could also be used to finely tune your timing
They are a right bugger to do, at least I have an engine bay hatch. I have done in situ with the wife holding the light. It's the only thing I have found mr vw didn't think too well on. It used to be so easy on a mini!
