Abandonned places. Towns, Stations etc.

  1. I was born in Cowes on the IOW and from when I was 8 or 9 my mates and I would play in the disused railway stations and tunnels from Cowes Terminus to Mill Hill. Everything was still there, from all the station signs and buildings to the signal boxes and tracks; all gone now obviously.
Stuff like that still fascinates me now, for some reason the Tube system in general but in particular disused and abandoned stations.

Have you tried here swanners

My son is addicted to gaining access to these places and taking photos. He's just finished a photography degree. He's out slaving for Jamie Oliver but I'll ask him when he gets in. Always makes a good picture.

  3. I used to play here, East Halton Skitter Brick Works

Just behind here was 'Winters Pond' with 2 derelict houses we used to play in - until the collapsed :)

If we walked the railway lines from East Halton to Killingholme we'd get to the old Killingholme oil depots with huge oil tanks which were abandoned. There were steam engines cars trucks and all sorts abandoned here so it was a great adventure playground. Also used to play in the hangars which used to house the Lancaster bombers - the D-day landing attached were started by the Lancaster's from Killingholme. Its now an industrial estate but the runway is still there in parts

When I was 14 me and my mates used to ride our motorbikes out to here, the fort in the middle of the humber which were used as anti submarine posts

its a wonder we made it beyond childhood...

We used to play in some desserted army barracks until one day (I wasn't there) Alan Willers fell from a third floor window dragging the guttering and half the wall with him. He survived but the list of bones he didn't break was shorter than than the ones he did. He was in hospital for 6 months and was not the same when he came back to school. I tell this story to Oli now and again as he goes out getting into trouble.

  5. that's what its all about mate. Every field by us had air raid shelters, army or RAF barracks, gun placements etc. We had a few minor injuries but no fatalities, which is good.

Be good, and if you can't be good, be careful.

  10. Shoreham cement works is an eerie place. I have been past and around that area several times when I have been up to Stenning bowl. It is a vision of an apocalyptic aftermath or something from 1984. Very cool.

  12. They had it on our local news last week, occupy Bristol have left college green. They ate now residing in a abandoned £4.5 million mansion down the road which looks like it was still in good condition.

Why does somebody just give a house like that up?

  16. We've got this little gem hidden away in Crystal Palace but it's not open to the public :(

    http://londonist.com/2011/11/campaign-to-re-open-crystal-palace-subway.php

Its the posh subway of the old high level Crystal Palace station which led directly into the Crystal Palace itself for the upper classes. There was a poor people station further down the hill ???

I do remember it opening about 20 years ago and my mum and dad taking me to see it and it was beautiful but its been shut ever since and now finally there is a campaign to open it, fix it and finally use it for something productive.

The old tunnels still exist too and there used to be an urban legend that a train crashed in one so they boarded it up and left the train and bodies in there  One end of the tunnel is in the woods and if you're on your own its the creepiest sensation to stand by that boarded up old tunnel :-
