A couple of questions on painting..

  1. hey guys, its been a long time since i've painted with anything other than a rattle can.

me and my dad painted an old renault once but neither of us can remember what we did. haha.

first off.. where do i get paint? ive tried searching online but didnt get anywhere. Ill be needing L90D paint which is the VW Pastel White.

secondly.. what do i need to do with it? i seem to remember adding paint thinners or something similar to it, but i dont know the ratio or anything.

lastly, is the laquer just bought and used straight out the tin? or does anything need to be added to that?

    cheers in advance, Carl.

  2. You need to go into apec on whiffler Rd

As for paint systems, do a google on 2 pack paint :)

  3. i use cellulose paint still, thin 50/50 with thinnners and paint, use ebay or internet or look in yellow pages for paint shops

  4. You could always use rustolume combi paint?

  5. Silver

    Silver Needs points/will pay!

Try someone like Jawel Paints, I would go for cellulose and avoid 2pack unless you do a lot more research on using it safely.

  6. Rustoleum , thinners and a roller job done

  7. how much thinners to paint? 50:50? 75:25?

  8. 10% with rustoleum

  9. Most of the research I've done into using rustoleum, people tend to use between 25-50% thinners.

  10. Ok.... I'm spraying, not rollering. Maybe that where I got the 10% from?

  11. Ok dude lets us know how you get on my figures were for rollering, although I would of thought it would have to be thinned quite well for spraying :)

  12. I've sprayed and rolled this paint see my thread for results take some after care but works well for the price , I mix till I'm happy with it but generally its 25-50% but have a play with it

  13. Im a lover of enamel tractor/coach paint for the home restorer and rustoleum is a good quality version of this paint and you can get it mixed to any colour aswell

The thing with enamel paint is its oil based and as such its viscosity varies according to temperature
As such theres no hard and fast rule for thinners ratios your aiming for the viscosity of full fat milk if your rollering it

All my tinware bits are painted with enamel straight from the tin via brush with no thinners
A little goes a very long way as it has a very high solids content but it takes an age to fully dry and it often appears properly dry on the surface but isnt fully cured below

If the air temp is above 15 degc and ideally around 20 deg c then you can heat the tin of enamel paint in a pan of boiling water whilst stirring slowly
This thins the paint and mixes the solids that settle at the bottom of the tin over time and also removes air from the paint

Once its warm and thin you can pour it straight in the gun with no thinners and spray away i find a gravity fed gun better as it uses less paint

Its a paint that you learn the feel of and its almost self levels so no orange peel
once you get to understand its characteristics and once you have your head around that you can achieve amazing results with just a brush or roller

Its the sort of paint you can do one panel a month on your bus when you can spare a sunday afternoon
Once youve done the whole bus a bit at a time youll be very impressed with the results

Put rustoleum paint job into u tube and take a look at others that have used it

Heres a few of my bits hand painted with tormastic tractor enamel

  14. That's what I plan to do with mine para, I've already bought the rustoleum and once I've got the dough to get the welding done and the weather warms up a bit, I'll be doing a panel or 2 every month. I have no choice I'm skint and its my daily :)

  15. that looks nice who sells the paint online?

  16. I agree I mix mainly to what I can in line with the weather as I've said I've tryed all the methods with good results
This is sprayed about 2 maybe 3 coats in summer I've had a nice shine after a couple of coats of his paint with out flating but I do two coats then flat were needed as the paints so thin sometimes [IMG]

    This is rolled

And this is mainly brushed out of the tin the gone over with some thinners on a brush after

And I now have a hvlp electric spray gun with a mini compressor that I'll be using to paint with as it will accept most paints

  18. I bought my paint from Auto Paints St Helens, 5 litres of the Pastel White and 5 litres of Orient Blue in 2k and it was just over the £200 mark, certainly no more than £250

I believe the only mask you can buy for spraying 2k is a Gerson one otherwise you need an external air feed.

Cheap DeVilbiss gun for a small compressor £50 and a small compressor :)

You mix 2 part paint to 1 part hardener then add 10% thinners. I would buy the plastic measuring cups as it makes it very easy then

Auto Paint St Helens will post it as well

  19. The only problem I can see with the Gerson, is that it does not have any eye protection... and you need to protect your eyes just as much as your lungs when spraying 2k!!

only 2k top coat is mixed 2:1

high build primer is either 4:1 or 5:1, and etch is either 1:1 or 2:1

    :)

  20. Who said that :D:D
