  4. This is just political shenaigans. A complete red herring. heard a really good debate on this on Any Questions/Answers..
    The arguments put forward.

    Saves time on journeys:
Nope, it's about sustained progress not maximum speed.

    Good for commerce saves money:
Oh so we should raise the speed limit for Commercial vehicles then.

cars consume more petrol mpg the faster they go.
Take up more space (increased breaking distance)

people are driving at those speeds anyway we'll enforce the rules.
Yep, whilst cutting back on traffic cops and speed cameras.

    And so on.

The minister was simply trying to side track the real issue. State of the roads, endless roadworks, poor investment in traffic management. Just band wagon jumping and all the mini Clarksons fell for it.

Interestingly the audience didnt and did not support the raise in speed limits.

We don't even have the basics like variable speed limits when it's raining which the French have had for years!

    So there C:)

  5. In the bus I tend to do 60, sometimes I will do 70, but that is only the speedo reading the actual speed is about 63 when 70 is displayed. In the works van I tend to do 80 I used to do 90 but was fed up with speeding letters.
80 is a decent speed on the motorway with good conditions.
I get wound up when I see people doing 55 or less on the motorway in modern cars as it makes lorries overtake them & adds to congestion. I don't include old cars in my criticism because I understand why the drivers go slow.
I think there should be a minimum speed limit on motorways for modern cars. :)

  6. point for the speed limit increase: cars they are better equiped than ever most have all round disk brakes, abs and high speed rated tyres and rack and pinion steering thus much safer than 1960 non servo drum brake crossply tyre'd stinkers that were thought to be safe upto 70mph.

point for not increasing limit: DRIVERS lets face it 75% of people on the motorway shouldnt be there not a clue of whats going on around them, more interested in there childrens argument over something trivial, talking on phone, texting, sat in middle lane, sat in middle lane doing 60 then 70 the 60, taking no notice of other people's signals, dont bother signaling, tailgating, driving at excess speed when congested etc etc higher speeds only work on the continent as drivers are trained to a high level

hippys will say we will use loads more fuel at 80 than 70 in the 60's they wernt jumping up and down when a 60's car with 3 main bearing crank, su carb etc would be lucky to do 30mpg at 70mph but there going mad when a modern aerodynamic 6 speed tdi car doing 80 will pull 50mpg without trying

either way a speed limit change makes no difference to me i only ever do 60 in the golf as im tight and it's so stress free cruise on sitting in the left lane occasionally touching throttle to overtake wagons

  7. Just means you get to the traffic jams quicker????????????

It's a funny thing about discussions on driving and speed. EVERYONE who goes faster than you drive is a dangerous idiot and strangely enough EVERYONE who drives slower than you drive ... shouldn't even be on the road at all. It's also a fact that if ANYONE dares to get in the way or be in the lane you want they deserve to be taken out and shot.

I personally think that the increase in motorway speed limits is softening us up for when they make the speed limit in towns 20mph.

The more vehicles on the road , the more bad driving we will see , law of averages .

i could do a whole series of bad driving storys , but in my job i don't want to tempt fate or dwell too long on them , the law of averages are against me !.
