80mph speed limit??? good or bad??

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by pinkarmy, Sep 29, 2011.

  1. i think its bad.... not only because there may be more fatal accidents and people will probably go 90mph ...

but.. me truggin along in my bug at 60mph will look even slower!

  2. We can get your bug to reach 90...

  4. It is a step in the right direction, I lived in Germany for 3 years so used the Autobahns a lot, the common misconception is that you drive as fast as you want. They still have speed limits however show some sense around times of day, congestion etc.

Oh hang on a minute we are talking about the UK, the motorway is congested all of the time so I guess 50 will be OK in the bus ::)

i don't see there being a difference. most people seem to do over 70 anyway and those who do 90 will do so anyway. but the police will loose money on speeding fines so will find money elsewhere, e.g wrong coloured number plates etc

how was this thread started? is there a petition or is it just something to discuss? i think it's a decent idea modern cars are far superior to when the limits were set, however, modern drivers???

  7. Not that bothered either way, but the annoying woman from Greenpeace on Channel 4 News has convinced me that it's a really good idea to raise the limit, or even abolish it.

  9. I can cruse at 80 in my pick up.
    I'm up for that.
With one fear from the C:)

  10. with the technology for variable speed limits already in place, why not put the limit up at certain times and back down at peak times? at 3am the m/ways could be 90

  11. It's fab news. Now we can get to the lakes in three hours...all I have to do is explain it to Bluebell.

    :D

  12. The problem is now if they cange it to 80 people will want to drive at 90.
So are they going to be stricter on speeds 80 +.

  13. I reckon the speed limit should be upped for motorways but have 2 limits and if your want to do 90mph you have to take another driving test.

I don't think I would drive any quicker when I think about it, just be 10 mph less over the limit :-[

(not in the van obviously - would be 10 mph more under the limit :-[)

  16. Seems to work well enough on the Continent, particularly like the French set up with one speed for clear dry conditions and one for wet weather.

  17. Theres so much traffic i hardly get chance to do 80 down here! Lol

Dont think my bay will be affected if the law changes

  18. I think it's a fab idea, well over due. I'll admit to not sticking to speed limits. The faster I go the more I concentrate. That's a fact and I guess it applies to most folk. Someone driving at 90mph and concentrating 100% is far safer than someone travelling at 70 chatting to passengers and only concentrating 50%. The biggest killer is lack of concentration. Not excessive speed.

There's talk that the Government are only increasing it in a bid for more popularlity. Oh really? In fact it's nothing more than an yet another act of common sense.

Sure, it'll cause more pollution. But journey's will be shorter, which'll limit any extra pollution. I guess it'll make no difference at all at the end of the day. I hate that, when people write 'at the end of the day'. Anyway, Green Peace are already spouting their predictable arguments against the increase. Tough titty. It looks like it's already in the bag. Most folk drive slower speeds nowadays to save cash anyway. So it shouldn't be assumed that everyone's going to start driving at 90 when the limit increases to 80. Me? I'll be driving at no less than 95. Right now, with a 70 limit, the cops don't bother you so long as you don't exceed 85. That's about 20% over. 80 + 20% = 96mph. Let's not split hairs and call it a ton. That'll do nicely.

I don't see the need to increase it; people pretty much drive the speed they want anyway. And any addition to the legal speed limit will only increase the amount people are happy exceed the limit.

There are statistics that show increased limit increases deaths on the road. Is this a risk you'd want to take? If they said we can get you to Australia in half the time but but 1 in 50 of the planes will crash, would you be accepting of that?
