i may have to rewrite this whole thread as it is quite confusing in part , basically prototype bay's became crossovers and crossovers became late's , there were two stage's of crossover May ish 71 until Aug 72 and Aug 72 to may 73 . after May 73 they were full on late bays .

i could add some stuff i have read about the process but tbh i don't think it makes much sense , i have owned these vans a long time and over that period have talked to a lot of people about them and wasted a lot of time and money ordering the wrong part , some people are so very knowledgeable but write nothing down , it is a shame someone like me that knows only the basics is the one to put pen to paper so to speak .

Incidentally not many of the people i have spoken to ( and i know they know these things ) have contradicted this thread and i know they would if i was a mile off the truth !

btw i only did this to clarify the parts ordering bit not to create a sub section or show how knowledgeable i am ! <-- on that point i am merely a novice .

  2. Cheers poptop, I just figured this thread would help identify to the guy that there are differences incase he has to buy parts. I found it useful so am sure others will mate :)

Ploppy add your findings to the history of crossover thread and I'll try and sort it out when I get time.

  6. I'm trying to work out when the non-sliding door middle sill disapeared, it's there on a '74 i've been working on and gone on a '77 i've owned, so '75 or '76. But sometimes they changed stuff part way through as well. They didn't make it very easy, good luck catalogueing everything, have you got 'vw transporter and microbus specification guide' by Molenaar and Prinz? Aka the pedants bible, Very helpful but not everything's included.

No i don't have that , i do have a lot of books but do you know what ? this is exactly what i mean by knowledgeable Bno , you work on these van's you know them inside out , so too does zed and a few others on here , i have simply owned them ( pre the one i have now ) and taken them into vw to be sorted , you really do need to put things down in writing you know .

Sorry can't help on the middle sill section btw , i have never had one replaced , my youngest type 2 was 74 and in quite good nick so no work needed .

  8. Maybe it's an indication of how sad i am, but it's a genuinely interesting book, production figures, m plate info, prototypes like the 4wd drive project, loads of cool pics from the factory, model changes, etc. well worth £20.
I do think a lot of the confusion comes about because companies don't list stuff correctly. For years jk had rear arches listed as 68-71 and '72-79, but it should be '68-70. There's loads of mistakes on all the big company's sites which doesn't help.

exactly -- probably because they don't have the information to hand , i hope this thread will go some way to helping sort that when i do a write up later .

it is worth noting that people like yourself know these thing's because it is your every day job , so when you order a part you just look at what you need and order the right thing ,if you are novice like me it is no good asking jk or vwh which part you need for your 72 high light has they simply can't be sure or don't know .

From what i can gleam and i have seen loads , the Aug 72 to may 73 models are all the same a crossover with late front .
