US buses: Single screw Later type headlights With Engine Codes CB 1972-1973 1700 (dual carb, manual trans) CD 1973 1700 (dual carb, auto trans)
ive got a feeling the steering colum braket (to the inner windscreen area) is a one off for our late crossovers as well malc. its deffently different to our late 73 built bus and im sure different from my old prototype
i think you find a few westy conversions made 72 then sat in dealers a while (as in wilmas case) 'cos from new westy conversions were very expensive compared to devon etc, i imagine only the wealthy could justify the better build quality
Wilma's back windows are early, originally she had sliding rear windows, but she has the late vents, square bumpers etc i think they all had sliders from new ( combi's ) but i have only been told this i am not 100% :-
Just spotted this on ebay , this tells me the underside is different too , i know the Brazilian ones i bought for my bus had to be modified ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VW-Early-bay-rear-cross-member-/321026559890?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item4abeac8f92
ARE WE AGREED THEN ? I think the 72 high light can be classed as a distinct category , i believe the bays made between August 72 and February 73 were really late crossovers that simply had the first late fronts , from what i can tell the only late features were the deformation panel , inner valance , front panel , high lights at the front and a late front bumper - nothing else is late , Well there are other latebay feature's but crossovers already had bigger rear lights , larger engine bay , larger rear vent ,none removable rear valance and flared front arches . This is important to know because when you order parts for your 72 late bay you will know most parts apart from those listed above are the same as a crossover and a lot of parts are just early parts , the back end from the A post is crossover , panels , slider , windows , hinges , you can include early crossrover doors and early hinges too , i also think the chassis had not been changed from early spec up until this date as i had trouble fitting later crossmembers etc to my van , as others have said - the switches and controls in the cab area are early and so too is the steering assembly . If we bear in mind the rear brakes were one year only ( 72 ) and the front disc brakes are two year only 71/72 , then we should all be on the right track re ordering bits . if you disagree and spot anything wrong in what i am saying please let me know
My 72 high light Which as the sharp eyed will see is a crossover with a late front , from the A post back it is the same as pic 2 .
Don't forget that the cab doors were the same as crossovers too. I think the date range for the cab doors is 71-73. My 73 has these and they were the lock-in-handle type. Earlier doors had pop-up buttons, and 74 onwards vans also had pop-up buttons for locking/unlocking.
