Good to see you got there in the end - collecting a complete set of type-4 tinware without spending stupid money takes patience!

  2. I think car restoration in itself teaches us to be patient whether we like it or not. Availability is always going to have an impact on the restoration time frame, as is the quality of the outcome we want. Some things just cant be rushed:thumbsup:

  3. I need to ask you guys another question. I am getting ready to purchase new heat exchangers. I know they are bloody expensive but have no other choice. My engine number is CU 096 299.
I have not had an opportunity to double check the port types in the head yet, for square or oval set up. I have seen so many differing parts codes for the exchangers on the web today, I am nearly gone cross eyed. I am assuming the only real way to confirm, is to remove the existing. Am i right. Thanks

You should be able to see without removing them, but you are sensible not to rely on the number stamped on the case 50 years ago.
You could also check the head part number by removing the rocker cover.

  5. Thanks. I am also smart enough to know that my inexperience of type 4 engines, makes me all the more likely to make a wrong interpretation of exactly what I am looking at. Thats why nothing tops you guys experience. I took a pic yesterday which leads me to believe they are square ports with a gasket between the heat exchanger flange and the mating face of the head, as i can clearly see a gasket. If they were the stub that fitted into the head I would not be able to see the oval copper gasket. But I am open to correction from those more wise than me, thats why I'm here. Thankyou. Plus plus on what Zed said but if they are CU items then these may be of interest.
They're JP so you may be able to shop around but BW also do the gaskets and elbows etc. They'll ship to Ireland iirc.

Cool. So even though it's a CU engine it'll likely have T2 'euro' hx on it:thumbsup:

Yes indeedy. Sq port T2 exchangers, there's a couple of inches in it. Not to mention they don't fit onto the fan housing as T25 only use the electric fan for heating air. Very different all round.

Makes sense. Theres a lot more room on a T3

If you’re in need of new gaskets, I have 4 that were given to me by @MorkC68 .
Pm if you want them…. just for the cost of the postage.

  14. I was going to say that those brickwerks ones were to long, but I was beaten to it. I have bought the correct T2 shroud so the existing T 25 will be getting changed for it, and the new T2 heat exchangers with the square ports will fit it I assume. Thanks guys.

  15. Just to refresh what my engine is. Its a Type 4 aircooled engine with T25 tinware and T25 fanshroud and T25 heat exchangers. It was fitted into my south african baywindow with some fancy metal bashing in the engine bay that I will be returning to baywindow spec. I have purchased 95 % of T 2 tinware, and the T2 fanshroud , and just getting ready to purchase the appropriate T2 heat exchangers with the square ports as per my pics. Thankyou all for your input, its much appreciated

  16. Back on track again with the Kombi

I managed to get the engine up and running after a small bit of work over the last week or two. I had to repair a cross threaded number 2 cylinder thread. That was courtesy of the previous owner, done and dusted with a reverse thread chaser that i made. I managed to get it running roughly with an intermittent misfire, . It has an Accuspark electronic module, and the strangest thing is the engine runs better with plug lead 2 and 4 disconnected. If i disconnect 4 it runs better than it being connected, and if i reconnect 4 and disconnect 2, same result. I made a quick vid of the problem. I haven't checked whether the distributer is timed to no 1 TDC at the moment as i believe some can be incorrectly set when these units are fitted. It was fitted when i bought it but only discovered it this evening.

    Are video uploads allowed. Thanks
