On the way back from Dorset last Friday when i reached 50 MPH the van would start to miss and loose power and drop speed to 30 - 40 mph. I stopped of twice and adjusted the points gap and it was a Little better and got us home. Today i used the van and the same thing was running really well but when hot and i reached 50 MPH ish it started to miss and run like a bag of s--t . I was thinking that it could be the coil breaking down when hot. What do you all think? :'(
It could be plugs or leads but most of it is new (only 500mils) the only thing that's not new is the coil and dizzy. Do you think it is worth doing away with the points and fitting electronic ignition
Don't worry about doing away with the points and condenser. If it were me, I'd change the coil first, then if no different take it from there. When was it last tuned/timed?
another thing to check is the needle valve in the float chamber of the carb but, i'd replace the condensor first
I forgot about the rev limit rotor arms. Ruddy annoying. I'm not sure if its the coil. When they start to break down they do but at any speed and rev eventually giving up completely. What is your fuel filter like and fuel delivery?? Sounds exactly the same as mine when the filter clogs.
Mine is doing this! Check you've not got too much connected to the coil. Mine has electronic ignition and fuel pump running off the coil. If I remove fuel pump and connect to the battery instead then it goes much better.
i dont think this is a coil problem ,maybe them stupid limiting rotor arms, poorly timed engine ?maybe .....badly set points ?id service it (full service)then change points etc, renew dizzy cap and leads and time it up and hopefully that will sort it....full service include gaping tthe rockers!.... peace out ,hope you get it sorted . coils normally just give up ghost ,they either work or dont ....
Exactly the same happened to my T1 motor. Started to run all sh1tty at about 45/50 then picked up at lower speed. Finally cut out and wouldnt restart. I thought it was dodgy fuel as id just filled up at a small garage. Turned out to be the coil (flamethrower). Changed it for a spare and was back up and running.
