Morning All, following on from my breakdown thread.... http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/broke-down-but-home-now-with-a-brew.62682/page-2

Ive come to the conclusion it was carb icing, last night ive had the manifold off to clean the heat riser pipes...

the other thing ive not really taken much notice of before was a heated collar that's wrapped round the up pipe of the manifold below the carb...[IMG][/IMG] [IMG][/IMG]
Its never been connected while we have owed the van. but i have put 12v to it and it does get hot. would this have been powered from the coil or something else ? no wiring for it was found when i sorted it all out

2. Its fed from the coil supply as you surmised.

so always heating ? can you see the photo's ?

4. Yes and no I cant see the photos but I'm familiar with the IMDU aftermarket manifold heater.

Great, thanks @fritt so all im missing is the other half of the inline fuse and a short length of wire. Any suggestions on fuse size ?

6. No need for it if your manifold heat risers are clear and connected to the exhaust.

9. I found that having a correctly working hot air feed to the carb (i.e. a proper VW air box) helped massively with icing - do you have a hot air feed?

The IMDU treats the symptoms, not the cause. Better off treating the cause really and making sure you are getting the required warm air in risers and inlet.

Heat risers are all clear, cleaned them out last night, although when i ran it up the left side was too hot to touch and the left side was a lot cooler (but still warm). they are not blocked as i blew the air line up !

Thats probably the main cause, its only got a pancake filter on, no OE air box

12. Yes. Same here. Cured my running problems when I fixed the warm air flap.

The IMDU does not provide enough heat .. I think the hot air flap lets in air heated with hundreds of watts waste heat from a cylinder head.
The IMDU is about 50 watts and some still manage to catch fire. Junk it and the pancake filter and get a stock air cleaner set up.

14. As above, get your carb preheat to the air filter working: stick a stock filter on. The blankets don't do anything.

15. I have a stock filter for sale :)

16. IMDU seemingly sell well but I venture to suggest the effect is largely in the mind. Such a low wattage applied to the heat sink capability of the manifold might help maintain a modicum of warmth once the engine is stationary after a period of running but starting from cold, when you need it most, the effect must be negligible. Being left on overnight could possibly help in a morning start up ...in a Swedish Winter

19. What filter should you have: oil path or the plastic box? What's your sticky-out bracket look like?
