Girlfriends dad has a 1600 type one in his, eeeuurgh, spit, splitty lol! He drives it for about ten miles and it cuts out??? We've checked fuel lines and delivery,we've changed the coil and checked electrics but still can't find the problem!!! It just stalls like fuel starvation, really strange!! Once its been standing for a while, almost like its had time to cool down, it'll start again and go on for another few miles then stall again. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance
Fuel tank not breathing? Next time it stops let go the tank filler cap, if theres a vacuum building up you'll hear the hiss of air inrush.
I had a similar problem with Loudoo's bus the other week, it was running ok but would have a momentarily loss of power at speed and cause jerking then ran ok again, I thought muck in carb so I swapped carbs but it still happend then I changed the coil but it still happened, in the end I changed the electronic dizzy for another and plugs and leads, it's running sweet as now
I've told him to buy an electronic ignition kit so ill see. I'm goings take it out tomorrow oath out he fuel cap on and see if there's any difference. It runs fine on idle, just seems to be after a a drive for a few miles. Thanks guys
Poss fuel starvation, but may be the coil. Old 'uns can suffer mysterious failures when hot. They heat up and one of the windings goes open circuit.
It may be that he simply has too many tattoos. A common cause of ignition failure for splitty owners.
He's going to order accuspark kit so we'll fit that and try the petrol cap off and see if there's any difference. Thanks
I don't know fella, it appears to be ticking over fine when it starts, then driven for about four five miles and it cuts out, then when left or ten to fifteen mins it'll start right up again go for five miles then cut out again.
What sort of speed are you getting to? Does a lower speed make it drive for longer, and a higher speed cuts out sooner?
I don't know, 0-40/50, he's just driving it mate? Doesn't seem to matter what speeds you're doing if its time it's time. Sometimes when it's going along at speed and then it stalled after pulling away from a junction.
My money would be on this too!! Dodgy float valve, is ok at low speeds, and as soon as you get above 40mph it runs out of fuel!! Usually restarts straight away too!!
Listed in order of probability, or what i would check first in your place: 1. faulty points 2. faulty coil or bad connection 12V supply voltage or main hi volatage cable. 3. loose fuel pump pin 4. fuel tank / filter blocked or tank breather 5. carb blocked or overflowing (float and valve?) 6. distributor gear not engaging / cracked cap 7. ignition switch - least likely
