But that's it isn't it? The C5 was an idea ahead of it's time, a concept waiting for other technology to come along that would make it truly viable. How many goes did Jobs get at the iPhone before all the bits he needed to make it work properly came along? Anyone remember the Newton?
I think “death trap” is more the phrase. Surely someone developing it would’ve given some thought to driving it in traffic?
A couple of years ago there was a crowd funded project to rerelease the 48k in a modern version, I think with the games pre installed or at least downloaded and I think with hdmi for modern TVs
Yes, agreed, but he couldn't build a traditional shaped bike with electric assistance, there were no suitable small motors or electric cell packs that fit the usual bicycle form factor, now we have those things it's different; he had crappy washing machine motors and heavy lead acid cells.
Atic Atac was ace - I remember making a map of it with my brother. Who remembers programming and loading Pokes? Especially when you couldn't complete a game, like Jet Set Willy.
Our dept at school bought a couple of ZX80 s for the computer club . It had no decimal point so we had to upgrade to the ZX81 . Wish I had bought a C5 when they were selling them off for about £250 each still in their boxes. One of our staff also bought one of their digital watches with red LED display. I still have a Spectrum in the loft that my kids used to use. -RIP Sir Clive
^this. There's no point in having a new plastic box. Found a old Sinclair calculator at my mum's...the one with the algorithms that give some quite dodgy results.
Computer studies started at my school, the year after I left. But I spent many hours playing Horace Goes Skiing, on the Spectrum… But I did prefer Dizzy.
Are you talking about the ZX Spectrum Next? It's a bit more than a modern 48k though. Edit: Link to the Issue 2 kickstart (which has closed btw): https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/spectrumnext/zx-spectrum-next-issue-2/description
Talking of old calculators…but not Sir Clive…Free gift, with your new purchase… Incidentally, I think there is a C5 in the Science Museum to look at, in that London, if I remember correctly.
I'm afraid Clive didn't believe in market research. If he thought it would work, he went with it. I had the pleasure of being his GM during the Zike era. It wasn't a well designed product. One of my more interesting jobs though.
Plenty of things in life whilst not being particularly well designed are still great. When you think about it the t2 is a daft idea. A van you can’t load properly from the rear cos the engine is in the way. You’d have thought at the first stage of market research that might have come to light. Seems a pretty big oversight for a commercial vehicle.
