091 gearbox

  1. Hi, I was under the camper today doing general poking, prodding, tightening etc and noticed the gearbox part number begins 091............ Does this mean it is a 091 box and is that the same as a 6 rib?

    Thanks dan

  2. It certainly does.

    Count the ribs

  3. all 76 on boxes are 091 ones but not all have 6rib (CP serial)

  4. So I have a Subaru engine and I've been told I should have a 091/6 rib gearbox because it's stronger and taller ratios, does this mean I'm sorted?

  5. you need to count the ribs on the diff housing... there will be 6 of them... like in this pic...

failing that, what engine does your van currently have?? As 6 ribs were only fitted to 2l engined vans!!

  6. Thanks Paul, I'll count them tomorrow. It already has the Subaru engine in but I think it was a 2.0 litre before? It's a 1978 westfalia Helsinki (I think it's a helsinki ? It has a full width bed) just out of interest, if I wanted to fit a Porsche 915 gearbox would it be relatively straight forward? It obviously has an adaptor plate fitted between the Subaru engine and the vw box already what else would I need? Different flywheel or/and starter motor?

  7. You'd need a different starter and flywheel... you can use the flywheel that you have, but you need the friction disc from the porsche clutch, and you have to modify the porsche box to use the vw release bearing...

easy enough to do when you know what you're up to ;)

  8. You make it sound quite simple!! :D it's a job for the future but it would make a massive difference I think, the engine has loads of power and is screaming out for a fifth gear.
If I did decide to do it and found a box would you be willing to carry out any necessary modifications the box might need? Obviously If I organised getting the box to you and crossing your palm with silver (or gold!!) at your usual rate?

  9. The other option is the 5 rib box as you can fit a long 4th from an early box in it BUT its not quite as strong and the internals are not as good. that would give you a 4th gear longer than a 2L box.

If you can find the gearbox code instead of the casting numers CU = 1600/3rib and CP=2000L/6rib.

with that set up i cruise at 70 at about 3500 rpm (still got stock full size wheels too.)

  10. I think I need to fit a rev counter so I can monitor exactly what's going on as I'm driving, she will cruise happily at 80mph plus and can still accelerate to overtake, the Only problem is me worrying that I'm over stressing the gearbox.

  11.
  12. Thanks Paul, I'll see how we get on with our month in France this summer and maybe look at a few upgrades over the winter!

I better start writing my Xmas list! Santa might have a job on his hands finding an elf to make me a 915 box!

How's your van restoration going by the way Paul? I read a thread a while ago but had a quick look earlier and couldn't find it?

  13. Doh!!! :-[ found it!!

  14. My resto, is on and off.... I squeeze some work in on it when I have a bit of free time!!
