Hi All, is there any way of knowing if i've already got a 009 distributor....cant see any numbers on it ...is there any other way of knowing, identifying it...as i want to fit electronic ignition....any advice greatfully received. thanks Lee
a) Is it in your van and running? b) has it got a vacuum can on the side? If yes and no, it's likely a 009 or clone thereof.
Hi Snotty ...you ok? yes its in the van and running ..and no vacuum ........but cant see any numbers on it so was unsure.......what do think about these electronic ignition units or should i stay with points set up?
Perhaps it is not then maybe? Can't see 009 on it like my van has,it has Vw Audi logo, but thought it was 009 I put a 009 accuspark service kit on it and it works ok
i have an 009, I fitted a pertronix2 Ignitor unit, Coil new HT leads, Cap, rotor and plugs (opened up to 35 thou gap). Had valve clearances set up (cold...) and then the Timing approx 30degrees BTDC at high revs (i believe). I could not believe how much better the 1800 type4 runs, drives. Worth the money and i'm off to Switzerland shortly (all old bits in Bus, just in case!)

I've got a 009 dizzy with a petronix electronic ignition, seems to do the job nicely but as others say the accuspark is just as good but cheaper.
I have seen criticisms of the Pertronix module that there is about a volt across it when the points are 'closed' . So I checked my Accuspark module on an oscilloscope and its the same. Accuspark give you heatsink grease to help the heat dissipate. Pertronix do not bother so I expect Pertronix run hotter. I think the 009 non vacuum dissys appear because the rebuilders want to stuff the dissy drive hole up with something both useful and cheaper. For a bus the vacuum advance helps as the rpm doesnt rise as quickly as in a Beetle. However I see virtually no centrifugal advance only dissys in the 1973 vw engine manual even for beetles. They are all 205 variants.
