I hate to ask a stupid question & apologise in advance as im sure you know what you are doing.. are you sure you have TDC on the compression stroke??
that's a valid point Zed - we have set them as follows, looking in through the back: #1 is right hand side, ~5 oclock position 90 degrees to the left we have #4 #3 is forward left ~ 11 oclock #2 is forward right ~ 1 oclock these are all connected to the respective plugs (we have checked and double checked) we did wonder this but time ran out on us earlier - which do we swap, say 1 and 3 & see what happens followed by 2 and 4? Thanks for replying Steve, much appreciated!
Your symptoms suggest incorrect firing order and it's easy (I should know!) to describe correctly as you have done, yet still plug 'em in wrong. I usually do 1 and 2 the wrong way.
Ill go check sunday & report back! I think Ill remove all plug leads & go back to scratch! Ill let you know what we find
Definitely sounds like leads in the wrong order Brain working slowly but...The firing order is 1-4-3-2 looking in the engine bay, 1 is front (of bus) right, 2 is back right, 3 is front left, 4 is back left. Has the engine run before, is the dizzy drive in correctly..are the valves closing properly?
yes the engine has run before - we had a 32/36 carb fitted but the adjusting screws meant you had to remove the carb each time you wanted to adjust it..because the bus is under resto, we had not had it tuned properly but the engine ran okay dizzy drive, we are certain its in right as the dizzy goes all the way down and appears to engage properly valves open and close as they should, we have checked this as we did the gaps this is how we set the firing order but first priority is to triple check!
Im certain we had it in the correct spot, both valves shut properly (we rotated the crank manually a few times to get a feel for the correct pot)
Still no joy? not familiar with icts, but you may have a spigot or two sticking out the side of the carb (s) for vac take off or manifold for servo....if left unplugged it will run like a sack of sh*t
Is it spitting back through the carb(s)? If yes, almost certainly a sign that your ignition timing is well out of sync with the carbs.
Yes it certainly is Snotty, down the balancer pipe too Thanks everyone for replying, I appreciate all the pointers so far!
I guess it is blowing back past the valves, you can see the flame coming out the carb top (no air filter fitted)
Clutching at straws now - dizzy drive gear 180 degrees out? http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=471182
Thanks Skutterbob, that appears to be the general consensus, we're gonna do a quick lead swap Sunday lunchtime!
