I've never seen one before, there's not one on my 2.0 litre, how vital is it?

  4. Same as me, I've never had one. But then again, over the years I have struggled with the engine running too hot. Through gradual tinkering I have got my overheating issues under control, without this shield and without an additional oil cooler; I will still add an oil cooler at some point regardless, I just want to get it "cool enough" without non-standard help first.

Without this Exhaust Heat Shield, all that intense heat from the exhaust (sooooooo flipping hot!!) just hits the tin and foam directly below the fan, which reduces the life of the foam and means the air entering the engine fan is going to be warmer, especially at stand still during this heatwave.

As you and I have seen, it seems to not be an essential item like the engine tin is. But the engineers at VW knew what they were doing, and to me it seems commons sense that all the heat from the exhaust hitting that tin can't be a good thing? It gets soooooooo flipping hot. This has gotta help. Especially during this heatwave.

    Just my thoughts :)

    Zed Gradually getting grumpier

In all the buses that came through Zed's, I saw one once on a dry state import. If they are important there are a lot of sub-perfect buses out there.

Why did VW spend time and money fitting a heat shield if it wasn’t necessary? Rather like a thermostat, it’ll work without but it’s better to have one.

This is the best I can find Rob. You can just see the end of it above the old Empi exhaust.

Think it stops your arse getting burnt when you sit on your rear bumper after a long run .

  14. They r that essential that Iv done 55k and got hot once over the Andorra mountains but it was 36'c going up a mountain for 3 hours non stop , but maybe wouldn't of if I had this , I'm only fitting one now as I've raised the engine up 4" so the exhaust is near the engine bay now rather be safe

  16. If you find it you'll probably want to fit it after all this scare mongering (fingers crossed mine does blow up nowo_O)

  17. Nah. They're pointless. Waste of good airflow.

  18. Did the original ones have an asbestos layer sandwiched inside?

Definitely some sort of insulation and at the time it was probably asbestos. I was very careful repairing mine and whatever it is sandwiched inside is completely sealed.
