The gutters along the hinge side of my '79 Devon Moonraker have needed attention for a few years and I have been putting it off and putting it off. Well the time has come and I have bitten the bullet and dived in.... Unfortunately I don't have a garage to work in so I've had to knock up a shelter on my drive to allow me to drill out the rivets on the hinges, un-bolt the gas struts and lift the roof up just enough to gain access...
I've started at the front end and i'm going to work my way back. I got hold of some gutter repair panels from Schofield's and they are spot on... luckily the repair panel is wide enough to take up all the rusty part in most areas. I will have to patch up In some areas where the rust has spread further up. So I've set about cutting out all of the rust and I've ground back to bare metal, Used a bit of rust converter on pitted areas on the inside surfaces then whacked on some David's Zinc primer... The first section cut and drilled for spot welds.... Clamped in ready for welding...
I have welded in a thin strip of steel along the top edge to allow me to weld the repair panel up to. this will also give a bit more strength in this area and hopefully make the area less likely to flex and crack the paint in future.
love Schofields. I like it when I got to pick stuff up and they say, we don't sell those because they are crap.
Like everyone else has said Top work, an area that seems to scare a lot of folk when it comes to doing repairs
I Know what you mean mate. I looked all over the Net to find any examples of similar repairs, just to see what I was going to be up against, but I found very few. In fact I only actually found some pics of patch repairs around the roof area.
Starting on the next section. This area is going to need a bit more patching in as the rust has spread a bit further up, past where my repair panel will cover... But firstly I needed to patch up the internal area shown here... The 2 holes on the left are where the rivets for the roof hinge go through. the cavity underneath was a bit pitted so I ground back as best as I could and treated it with some rust converter and zinc primer. This whole area needed to come out... Tacked in... Welded... Finished...
