Apologies for resurrecting an old post, but did you ever manage to do away with the rubber coupling? Reason for asking is I've just started a DIY power steering conversion using Corsa C EPS but the coupling seems to be too small for the 19mm shaft on the steering box.
Jeez, now your asking, that was 8 years ago Looking through old pics, I don’t think I did, just the UJ on the shaft
Ok no problem and thanks anyway. I know the feeling as I cant remember what I did yesterday let alone 8 years ago!
Old thread I know but thought it best to still ask a steering coupling question here… Removed the coupling from my bus … seems bendier that I thought it would be… The one that came with my spare box I can’t only bend a few microns… Is the non bendy one still ok to use or are the small cracks signs of it going to fail ?
Hello everyone, we have some discussions the last years in German bay window forum (https://forum.bulli.org/viewtopic.php?f=7&t=29486) and also the US at theSamba saw these issues ( https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=435679 ) about dangerous rag joint (German: "Hardyscheibe") on market. Many previously trustworthy manufacturers no longer deliver. Spare parts with too little fabric reinforcement that tore or became brittle after a short time were admired. Some people have bought several to test cut them up to check the inner workings. Be careful... and put the inspection sighting on your yearly maintenance list. regards,
Don't use the bendy one, I had a customer who's had literally torn off and wedged itself under the brake pedal. He drove about 200 miles with just the bolts on the steering shaft catching the top of the steering box about 180 degs of free play and the brakes partly on. Stupid I know, he hadn't even looked underneath, just carriied on with his fingers crossed.
Its not exactly new just off the 76 steering box I picked up… looks original and has a few hairline cracks
I wouldn’t use the one with cracks personally. I just replaced mine - lares brand bought from rock auto in the states
Yeah I read the samba article etc you linked, still trying to convince myself to buy a couple from the states...
