this is my very first project, and have never had or played with any VW cars before, but have always loved the bay window VW's im going to try to do most of it myself, but being brand new to the T2 scene im sure ill be spending a lot of time asking lots of questions so here he is its a 2.0L auto, and looks like its recently had a camper roof fitted, no interior, no seats, the engine is removed and in the middle of the van there has been work done, new front panel, front drivers wheel arch and step, pas wheel arch, and some work to the rear 1/4's on the way home first job was to sand down and repaint the front panel as there was surface rust already! next job was to remove the "interesting" repair work on the RHS front wheel arch patches over patches, untreated welds and lots of rust! this is where i am at day 2 of ownership, sitting here a little worried about what i have just got myself into lol
Plenty of help on here mate. Folks on here make buses out of spider webs and string! Metal, luxury! Steve
iv been getting brave with my angle grinder, in the hunt for good metal, just waiting for my dad to ger home from holiday so i can steal his mig welder :supsbrew: then i can really get started. need to replace the arch and probably the step too, seen a few different arches and panels, is this the right one? http://www.vwheritage.com/vw_spares_Wheel-Arch-Complete-Front-Right-T2-8-72-79-Repro_act_shop.product_pID_136695_lang_EN_country_GB.htm?crumbPageToLoad=1 iv even had a bit of input from the mrs,
Dude your going to need to repair the inner parts of the sill before welding that plate in Also the welding on the plate above the jacking point look terrible If i was you id take that front wheel off and remove that welded plate then wire brush a larger area around where you have cut out to see if the rot stretches any further out Id also have a right good poke around your inner and outer sills to see if they are rotten or have been bodged Good luck with the resto dude and welcome to bus ownership
looking at the poor quality of work carried out by the po it would be worth spending some time on the other repairs. the front panel has been replaced and it needs some work have you got a timescale? you have a challenge on your hands, good luck
spent a bit more time on uggy today, still removing parts rather than putting it back together removed the original wheel arch outer skin then set at the jacking arm, i did start with a grinder but decided this was far to over the top to remove the welds, i opted for the wiggle method and it was off in no time, its a good job i never tried to lift the van using it the next job is to repair the inner seal, its only gone at the very end, but i have no idea how it is susposed to look in non rottern form, after that i can get the panel above the jacking point ready to replace, any ideas how this is supposed to look???
No worries mate There's always someone on here at the same stage or have done it previously to help out
Hi Markey, as I read the thread I was going to sugest you could knock the outrigger off. You certainly do need to remove the PO's work It doesn't look like the same person fitted the front panel though...
This wet weather isn't helping... Non-porous coatings are available, and perhaps a must working outside?
