You might want to mark the floor with some tape to show exactly where the gear lever was. I wouldn't bother but then I'm happy setting up gear levers. Is it a stock gear lever?
Yes good point, I have it on my step by step instructions. Of course it's a stock gear lever, none of this fancy stuff for me, except the engine and all the other non stock stuff!
Front guide sleeve (bush) changed! 10 The hardest bit was undoing the square lock screw, that took ages. 23. My 5/16 spanner came up trumps again! Then it took a while to get the shift rod out. 11 When I looked closely at the old bush it looked fine, it rotated but didn't seem to have much movement in it. It took ages to get the old bit of plastic out. When I put the new bush in it did feel like there was less movement. Once in, I couldn't rotate it at all. So I'm happy that changing it wasn't a pointless exercise. I'll add a video of me waggling the new one about, hopefully the difference will be noticeable. I remembered to replace the wire in the lock screw, it looks like a child did it! I marked the position of the gear lever with tape, but getting the bugger back in was a bit of a wrestle, I was happy just to get it bolted down! So it's all back in and I can still select all the gears, but they seem at slightly different angles. I only drove it round the block. The gear shift stop plate needs readjusting, any tips gratefully received? I seem to remember something about putting it in 2nd and then tightening it down again? Now its bolted down and back in place, I may try loosening it off and trying to get it back more closely to it's original position. I wanted to rule out gear box oil level as a possible cause of gear change issue. I borrowed a 17mm Allen key & bought some gearbox oil. I got it as level as possible, once the plug was completely out oil poured out, so i assume it has enough in it? Thanks very much for all the pointers and encouragement. Things that seem easy to you guys are very hard for me.

Yes, slacken bolts slightly, bottom section vertical front to back using the slots then push the lock plate to the left until it just touches the gear lever (you can't see it but you'll be able to tell) then tighten the bolts. If you end up punching the handbrake lever, move it backwards, that won't effect the gear change.

Yes im slowly gaining some mechanical confidence. Its weird i think ill break the camper, but ive mended my laptop a few times just by watching youtube videos. The laptop internals are far smaller and more complicated as well!
I marked the floor with tape, then the bus rolled forwards. Now the tape is on the floor somewhere under the belly pan. What should I do ?
Thanks that worked a treat. Decided i hadn't used enough grease so took it off again. So I've got a bit of extra practice in! Read another post you had made about this bit of gear lever needing to be circular.... Mine seems to have some wear!
The reverse lockout is that part and the plate. To select reverse when you push down that bit dips below the lockout plate so you can push the gear lever further over for reverse. The more it wears the more fiddly it becomes to set up. Once it wears right to the stick you can't set up the reverse lock out at all. Best cure is to build up with weld and file it to the right shape. New sticks on the market are two piece with that lock out part being essentially a washer. Total crud IMO and others who've had them break apart so fixing the old is the best way forward.
I added some to my post above, but you'll probably find any second hand stick is worn just like yours. Easiest to fix what you have but of course you need a mig welder or a mate with one. costs nothing, doesn't take long.
Even better i have a mate who would love to weld it for me. I'll leave that until winter time when the bus won't be used as much
@scrooge95 Do you want to swap spare front bushes? My bag of shuttle cocks and bushes came with an early and a 'late' front bush. I have a spare late bush that i will never use, hopefully you have a spare early you will never use. Swap next time i see you? The one I just removed was probably the original one as it has vw stamped on it and loads of tiny numbers. Bet my Brazilian replacement won't last 50 years.
