no, the cam will have worn over a long time, contamination is likely to be minimal as the oil goes through the filter before going around the system, you may need bearings, but you can just rebuild with a new or used cam and keep going, ive done plenty like that and worse, still running years and 10 of thousands of miles later, you can spend thousands on a rebuild, but that doesn't mean you have to
The cam and followers yes. Not the whole engine, but it will need a good clean out, could need new bearings, might need new pistons and cylinders, the heads might need new guides etc etc. and a gasket set. You're probably looking at £500-1000 DIY. But that's a guess - who knows, maybe the oil pump is knackered, the crank might need polish, the heads could have receding valve seats. Nothing is off the table really. Why would he do that when the last VW expert charged him £500 to do something pointless? No offence to Garrick.
Because Gedd's been coming to me for 15 years an no's my work is good I NEVER put a 2nd hand cam in a rebuild. If your gunna rebuild an engine do it RIGHT.
using a second hand cam isn't wrong if there's nothing wrong with it, fitting a new one unnecessarily is
how long they been in? if they were new pitting takes a while whereas the damage from a knackered cam lobe can happen straight away
I feel very stupid I had the lifters changed 8 weeks ago I got confused as I know lifters are also tapits I cant spell. Followers haven't been changed with me but looks like the tubes are new so I shouldn't imagine they are to old
Would John Maher use a 2nd hand cam. Errr No Instead of using the starter to turn the engine over ,put a spanner on the alternator nut and turn it by hand till the top of the lobe is visible. Clean it with a rag then take a pic of it
They should be slightly convex, two end on end should rock a little. On the blown up photo, I guess they are smooth if you say so, but the sure look funny to me. Lifters/followers/same thing. It's probably me confusing you by using the wrong term. There is BAD wear on the "two" consistent with a bad lobe and we know that one isn't moving the valve much so that makes it 100% that you have damage to one lobe and two followers. The other followers? Do they rock or have they worn flat already because it looks that way to me. There's a circle around the edge that hasn't worn yet...that's what it looks like to me but others may see it differently.
Could I afford a blue printed John Maher racing engine? No! Would it be money well spent for a bus even if I could? Not for me. Be fair, John Maher would probably chuck everything but the case which he'd mod in all sorts of ways...does he even do T4s?
doesn't make him right, he just happens to have written a book, changing stuff for the sake of the phrase "its all new" is no reason at all
