Are the VW fit servos usually under a shield or cover? Are they covered by the belly pans normally or are they also just exposed?
Currently, in the pictures, I have it facing forwards as that gives the best clearance for the handbrake cables. It is the black mushroom shaped cover, facing forwards. I will have another look at having it facing to the rear. This will also solve the issue of the vac take off looping back. I will probably have to block off the heater pipe that feeds into the rear area of the van just behind the walkway. That is rubbish anyway.
On the VW fit servos there’s a hose up to the top rear of the wheel arch – I can’t remember if it goes into a box section or behind a cover but it’s somewhere dry.
After much research, it seems that this servo is designed for a wide variety of locations. It does seem that facing rear for the air control valve is best but it is angled down and filtered to prevent ingress. So, I will locate it with the air control valve to the rear of the van. It is going to be next weekend before any further progress as I have a very busy school week.
Does this have any benefit over the std servo which I have fitted on my 72. Would I get better braking?
PS If you've got poor braking, worth looking at the brakes themselves. The servo just reduces the pedal effort.
Made in Spain. It seems lots of them are fitted to splittys with a dual master cylinder conversion. They mount them under the floor too. For me it is about making the brakes less effort. The van stops OK. Just getting older and want it to be easier to drive. As Snotty says. If you brakes are poor check for sticking calipers and the need for a brake service.
Confirmed today with the supplier, that it is fine to have the servo mounted under the van. It is filtered and covered in such a way that prevents ingress of dirt and water into the servo.
Should be protected against bashing by the front beam, yes? I'd give it a wipe over with Waxoyl or similar to stop it rotting.
I need to route the vac tube under the van. Can anyone tell me if it is OK to drill through the cross members that run between the chassis legs. I will need to drill 25mm holes to fit grommets for the vac tube to run through. I know that the wiring harness, clutch cable and other things already run through this but I do not want to cause any structural issues.
Update!. Got the holes drilled for the Vac pipe. you need to drill a hole through the cross member for the Vac pipe to run through. Remember to rust seal this. I have K rusted it and then will use a bit of POR 15 followed by stone chip. 2 grommets in this and then the hose. you also need to bring the hose into the engine bay. I have only found one place to do this. On the LH side of the engine bay. Just enough room. WTF is wrong with photobucket??? Cant copy the image link. At last!!!
Does anyone know if it is best to put the one way valve for the vac take off nearest to the manifold or to the servo?
