have a look at snow socks rather than chains http://www.racshop.co.uk/travel-touring/winter-driving/snow-socks/product/fit-go-snow-sox-i.html
We have winter wheels and tyres for both cars - the wheels not being used sit on wheel stands as its better than just stacking them up in the corner. Haven't switched mine over yet as my spare wheels are renaults and therefore as the daily is a modern VAG the centre bore is 57.1 (renault is 60.1) and I need to get the spigot rings sorted out. After the first time I used a car with winter tyres on I wouldn't be without them.
Plus a millionty on this. Tyres are not what they used to be, when I was a lad, you'd have been a gert girl to have had to have winter tyres. Now though, summer and winter tyres are completely different animals. It should be the law to change over.
I've got snow shoes that I bought for my T4 when in Spain. If you got stuck travelling in snow without snow tyres/chains/shoes etc and the Guardia stop you can get fined. When we drove back to the uk for Xmas and were worried about getting stuck in the snow in France I forgot I had them under the seat
I had a t5 with the 130 tdi. Standard tyres. It was great in the snow. I could get it to go everywhere. Swapped it for a caddy maxi. Slightest hint of snow and I leave it in the garage! It's useless!
Whilst in Switzerland I had winter tyres on the front of my beetle and put chains on the rear when required. Could go up trees. I might add that the winter tyres, having being left on, did a tour of a Moroccan wadi later that year.
Went to Latitude festival (in Izzy) 3 years ago when it was thick slippery mud all over the site, did not get stuck at all unlike others in lowered versions. It did take a long time to pressure wash all the sludge off!
