Wiring question re handbrake warning light

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyC, Sep 29, 2015.

  1. Are they connected? If not, try joining them.

  2. They are next to each other, but not normally connected.

As the diagram suggests that they both need an earth, I tried both joining the two terminals, and running them to seperate earth points.
    Neither worked :(

  3. Me again! :)
I love this troubleshooting business! As long as I get a solution in the end.

Found this interesting page on the web.
Explains the operation of the light, which should enable me to test it further.

According to that, if I wire it up as per diagram, and remove the wire from terminal K, the light should be unaffected by any possible master cylinder issue.

I can also test to see if there is 12v coming up the red wire.
If there is, that will lead me to a master cylinder fault.

  4. The "bulb" does have a bit of basic electronics in it, which may have packed up. Worth checking out.

My basic approach to things containing resistors, diodes and flux capacitors...

Somethings broke, can't see what it is, must be electronics, stick a bit of tape over it :D

  6. Ok. So lamp and wiring tested.

    Tests were:

    1) remove wires from terminals 61 and k. If bulb still works, light faulty.
    2) check for 12v on red wire. I did this with ignition on and engine running. Both zero. I then did it whilst pressing brake pedal. Rose to 0.5v, but not enough to suggest a fault (12v).

So I'm reasonably happy the light is at fault.

@theBusmonkey very easy to test :)

  7. There do seem to have been several types of these things over the years. Exactly what wires/colours do you have coming from under the dash?

  8. Red
    Black
    Brown
    White&yellow/green (I'm colour blind)

  9. Well, update.

As I diagnosed my light as faulty, it's gone off to @snotty for him to have a poke around with and see if it's fixable.
In the meantime, in case it's not, I sourced a working 4 pin light.
Fitted this morning and that works.

So either the five pin doesn't work in my bus (unlikely) or the light is broken (likely) and might be fixable.
    We shall see.

  10. It's under investigation :) Out of interest, what wires to you connect to what, and how does the light behave? Seem to have been several variations over the years. I'd expect yours to come on when the handbrake's on and also come on when a brake circuit fails (which is hard to test...)

  11. Yep. That's the puppy.

    31 is earth
    15 is live

k is the feed from the brake switch
61 is the feed from the handbrake switch

v, well, I think it's just another earth.
