Wiring question re handbrake warning light

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by AndyC, Sep 29, 2015.

  1. OK, so I have a US Cali which has lots of "unusual" features.
I say unusual, most of them are a pain!

Anyway, one of these features is a handbrake warning light.
It acts as a warning light to let you know your handbrake is on (obviously), but also as a warning re brake fluid level (I believe).

When I bought my bus, it had a badly cracked lens.
I struggled to find another, but eventually got one.
Only problem was it was a 5 pin light and not a 4 pin like previously.

Anyway, I think I installed it at the time and it worked.
However, the wiring came out the back at some point and I just left it as it was.

Now I have some time off, I'm trying to fix it again.

I have wired it up as per @Paul Weeding thread --> http://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/handbrake-warning-light.23600/page-2#post-393451
and also a picture on a Kombi forum, as it is specific to the five pin light. Although the "blue" wire is (I believe) the white/yellow one going to the handbrake switch.

    Now, the light works.
However, it does not turn off when the handbrake is released.

    Does this mean:

    a) It's wired wrong
    b) The handbrake switch is faulty (I don't think it is, as if I wire it "wrong" I can make the light come on by pressing it)
    c) The light is on to indicate a fault with the brake fluid.

If it is c, how can I test this?

    Sorry to waffle on!!!

  2. Looks full up to me.
Well, not full up, but not low by any means.

  3. What numbering does your warning light have on the back?

It doesn't measure brake fluid level, BTW. If it comes on, it means one of your two brake circuits has blown out.

    AndyC likes this.
  4. As in what terminals?

The ones listed on the image above (5 pin).

  5. Ok. I'll have shufti at a wiring diagram in a mo.

  6. Ta muchly.

My wiring had two brown earth wires sharing a female spade connector, but the diagram above suggests they should be seperate (to go to two different terminals).

On mine, the eart wires come from the cluster on the dash, and behind the heater diagram on the dash.

One of you switchs on the mc might be faulty try shorting them out one at a time

  8. Right. According to diag for a four-pinner (I think the earth is just doubled up on the five-pinner):

    15/Black - to +ve supply via fuse 11
K/Red - to 81a contacts of switches (in parallel)
Black supply from F11 to 82a contacts (in parallel)
    31/Brown(s) - ground
    61/White/Green - to handbrake switch

    What is yours not doing?

  9. That's long gone.

Although I would only have thrown it out if I knew the new light worked.
So I'm sure it would have worked at one point.

  10. OK.
    I've got:

    15 / Black
    K / Red
    31 / Brown
    V / Another brown!
    61 / White/green

Can you explain "K/Red - to 81a contacts of switches (in parallel)
Black supply from F11 to 82a contacts (in parallel)"
    in idiot speak :)

  11. Just the connections to the brake switch contacts (81a and 82a). They're connected in pairs.

  12. So are you saying K needs two wires going to it?
    Coz it doesn't.....

    Ah no, sorry.
Just checked wiring diagram at top.
    Ignore me :)

  13. Can anyone enlighten me on the terminals V and 31 situation.

Do the two terminals need connecting?

I think the warning light is for telling you the handbrake is on or one of the the brake light switches has failed, what happens if you unplug both switches

  15. The switches are also for low pressure which could be caused by a leak or low fluid.

  16. I will try that.

    Although I assume I won't notice anything.

  17. OK, that is not currently the setup!

    Tomorrow, I fight another day!
