Wiring Loom

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by mattw, Feb 21, 2015.

  1. I'm in the process of fitting a new loom to the van. I've disconnected all the engine bay wires and labeled them up. My question is, how the heck do I pull this nest of wires through the conduit under the van? Should I just cut the old loom?

  2. Disconnect the wires from the front. Pop them out of the connectors/plug and pull it out from the rear
Attach a bit of string to the end before you start and you will then be able to use the string to pull the new one in

  3. Ah, makes sense! on to the front!

  4. I've now disconnected the front wires and got the loom out of the cab. Now trying to pull it through. Seems to be stuck on a branch at the rear which goes to the starter motor, as well as an annoying brown wire that looks to go into the inner wheel arch, presumably for the fuel sender. Any ideas on how to remove the brown wire before I cut it?

  5. ....b r o w n wire not poo bus!

  6. yes, wire is for fuel sender.

you might be able to pull it down from the hole by the when arch to expose the connector, there is a straight connector just inside which you should be able to unplug it from

failing that you can get it from the fuel filler area inside the engine bay (behind the paint tin lid if you have one)

regarding the starter part, pull the rear part of the loom out of the engine bay towards the starter from underneath as I don't think the starter branch will go through the hole into the engine bay easily

I might be interested in your old loom to use as a pattern if its not to cut up

  8. I finally managed to get the old loom out so on to the new one. I've been studying the wiring diagrams in relation to my new Autosparks loom from Just Kampers and it mostly seems to tally up with all the correct coloured wires. I might have to use a few of my original wires in part where necessary.

Hoping to get this competed ASAP as I need to get the van ready for my sisters wedding at the start of May and this is the first job of many!

You are more than welcome to use it once I have finished with it but I might have to cut a few wires out for re-use!

If you intend making new looms with original colours I'm definately in the market for one eventually.

  11. Another loom question but this time it is at the front end.

I've been focussing behind the dash the evening which took me on to the ignition switch. My van is a 72 crossover so I believe it has the early soldered connections. My question is how do I get to these wires? Do I need to remove the steering colum as is suggested in other threads I've read?!

This is turning into a longer job than planned! Need to get the van up and running before the 1st May for my sisters wedding....aghhhh!

  12. Mine is a 72 and it had spade male and female connectors but then I replaced my starter switch as was melting

  13. Mines a 72 and had spade connectors

There it a 'tail' of wires which are soldered to the back of the ignition switch, the other end should have spade terminals connecting into a 4 way connector usually sitting on top of the steering column bracket.

Unless your ignition switch is broken you should be able to retain it only replacing the main cab loom. If it is soldered you can just cut them and re terminate with crimps

  14. Thanks guys, I'll look into that in a bit more detail shortly.
Managed to get the new headlight part of the loom fitted this eve and ordered some new halogen H4 bulbs so hoping my lights will be improved!

  15. Can anyone help with my ignition wires? I seem to have a grey wire and a brown/blue wore coming from my ignition switch. Both have been taped up and were not connected. I can't seem to find these on my wiring diagrams?

  16. I think they're for a later or USA spec bus which has an "Ignition key warning Buzzer" and/or an extra accessory position on the ignition.

You can see the buzzer and br0wn wire on this diag:

H3 is the buzzer and SU the extra terminal on the ign switch.

You can leave them taped up.

  18. Anyone got any ideas on my above post?

Can the below muti connector take the current of the ignition wires?

The terminals that go inside them are bought seperately so you could buy the ones which fit your wire size.
