Wipers- slow….slow….slowwwwww

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Dicky, Aug 13, 2021.

  1. Think that describes the issue. Wipers sweep freely with the blades off the screen but in operation are weedy and actually stop mid sweep. Before I engage with the issue. Which looks a proper pain. Dash out? Thought I’d ask (can’t hurt) What are the usual suspects needing attention here. Problems been getting worse for a while tbh!
    Thanks in advance!

  5. This ^^ order a couple of the circlips first, one of mine broke getting it off, wont matter if you dont need to use the van for a few days, pop cap out the wiper arm, remove nut, remove arm, remove spindle cover, put the nut back on the spindle so it doesnt drop inside the van, pop circlip off, lube with WD or such, once all moving freely drip a bit of oil in. Or you can do it properly and take all the dash out. I would rather do this every year, only takes half hour.

Sounds exactly like my westy before I oiled them - whizzed off the screen but struggled on it. I was foolish enough to dismantle it all before dicovering the spindles were dry as a bone - it just needed some lubrication.

  8. I’m on it! Notice passenger side wants to drop out but not drivers. Play but doesn’t feel like it would push through… anyway got it soaking for a bit. Will oil reassemble and report back. Thank you !

  9. Are the pivots on the rack (inside that operates them) metal on metal or nylon bushes. If the former then I will lube?

  10. The
motor needs to be removed. Opened and regreased .If it hasn’t been done before. The Grease Inside gets really hard brittle and loses its moisture . That’s what I had to do

  12. 3 in 1 type oil down the spindles sorted mine:thumbsup:
Take the arms off, switch on and ease a bit of oil in and let it work it's way round .

  17. Yep… method was adopted! Also blew em out with air gun before oiling. Surprised at the amount of gunk that came out!

  18. No probs, I actually use Wurth 2040 rather than WD40, It stays oilier longer rather than evaporating off. Just to correct myself :)

Generally I can get the wiper assembly out by taking out the glove box, and popping up the centre vents on the dash by releasing the clips by squeezing them and pushing up, removing the hot air "antlers" and undoing the single central bolt holding the motor to a rubber grommet. Undo the two nuts outside, push the spindles in without pushing the grommets out, and the whole lot slides out the glove box hole.

No need to remove the dash. Just dont drop stuff down the totem pole.

The motor can need disassembling and the sintered bearings need oiling. When reassembling, remember which way round the motor body assembly goes on, it will run backwards if assembled 180 degrees out. The worm gear on the end of the motor shaft has an extremely sharp profile, and will draw blood.
