What difference does it make. I worked for ten years to better myself. The big window firm I worked for paid for me to resit my O levels and progress on to a government Structural engineering course ( which they did back then ) specialising in curtain walling ( big glass buildings). They pushed me on with other qualifications whilst I studied. Before I had qualified as a structural engineer they asked me to do a site co ordination course and run transport ( 3 Lorries) which meant I had to do a managers cpc, management courses and health and safety courses, I took it all in my stride, I was young, but the stress was building up. In the course of all this they paid for me to take an hgv test which I did and promptly forgot about. Just as I qualified the final part as a s/e, the stress got to me and I walked. I had actually been running transport, shooting off to site all over the country in the day as site coordinator, and studying for my finals at the same time. I just cracked. The only qualification I use now is my hgv licence. What a waste of nearly ten years? Btw, I was one of those kids at school who - " could do better!"
Don't be put off going back into education if you fancy it. Whilst it isn't for everyone it can be a great experience, I thoroughly enjoyed it and it enabled me to get a job that pays well enough to keep me in a lifestyle I could get used to. I'm not particularly bright but I did work bloody hard and had great support from my missus. I was a nightmare in school according to the teachers I've spoken to since and how I got 4 CSEs (lower than an O level) I'll never know. After leaving school I carried on just the same, even the navy put me in a specialist team rather than on a ship with too many other people I could beat up. The Falklands war had a bad affect on me, the navy had to send me up to Faslane to get me out of the way as I got banned from every pub in Pompey. I'm not entirely sure how I decided to go back to school but for me it was the best thing I ever did.
Never came across anyone like that but there was one fella a couple of years behind us in Bangor who wore a shirt, jacket as per many men but then wore a skirt and tights with them. Wouldn't have minded if he was good looking but he was a fat bald bloke by the name of Friday
Came out of school with nowt! Then light vehicle mechanic city and guilds, then commercial air diver cert HSE Part I, then saturation commercial diver part II, 1st class BSc hons in physiotherapy and various courses since then in Physio! If anyone ever tells you that you are to old to re educate they are talking Bo@:"cks! You are never to old! My mum passed a degree in computer hardware at the age of 68!
No we were the elite, a special calibre of person who was stupid enough to put up with endless mud runs, take a tree trunk to the pub and get woken up at all hours with some divot screaming AWKWARD!! down your ear ole. Funnily enough I feel all nostalgic, just goes to show
I've got a HNC in Production and Mechanical Engineering NVQ D32 & D34 Assesor and Internal Verifier Currently halfway through a Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree with The Open University
Update: Asside from the Ba Hons in Product Design I mentioned earlier in this thread I did some research and the University of Google came up trumps. For the bargain price of 366 Botswanan Pula a chap called "Dave" will award you up to 5 qualifications with genuine certificates. I now have degrees as follows: Bsc Astrophysics & Lunar Science Masters in Golf & Green Keeping Bsc Gynaecology HND in Marsupial Sociology Law Degree in Celebrity Sex Case Defence. (Figured I could make some wonga right now) I can recommend him - very quick service and the certificate came laminated.
