  7. Or possibly you could thank Auto Union who raced mid engined GP cars successfully in the '30s.
    Less successful was the 1955 Bugatti type 251 which had a transverse mounted straight8 behind the driver and only lasted for a few uncompetitive laps in that year's French GP.
