I'm taking the" oh oh 9" dizzy off my 1600 bug to fit a vacuum dizzy. I've done my research on the brilliant "old volks home" website
    http://www.oldvolkshome.com/ovhignbo.htm

But i have a question. Do i use the vacuum only advance dizzy from the late 60's, because i have a good one in my shed, or would i be better off looking for a SVDA from the mid70's. The dizzy i already have is a VW service replacement part for 1500-1600.
Do you think the SVDA is much better than the vacuum only dizzy?

    ps i have a solex 34pict3 carb.

  2. I wouldn't use the vacuum-only dissy - things have moved on, and you may not be able to drive the vacuum correctly from your engine. Vac+mech advance is better.

If you want a straight swap, use something like a Mexican 034 distributor with points or a pertronix, or mebbe one of the Accuspark jobs that folk seem to buy.

What engine code is your Beetle, out of interest?

  3. I believe those vac only's are pretty rare.....never seen one.....is it a cast iron body, or aluminium?
The original 'svda' dizzys are no longer available....they were vw peubla versions of the 034 vac/mech sold by aircooled net in the states, so still had a decent manufacturing quality to them...The 'svda's you see on fleabay are disposable copies....plenty of people use them and recommend them so they must be OK, but when you consider a points version can be had for the price of a meal for two at Weatherspoons, plus a pint, they can't be much cop...IMO

The vac only is matched for an earlier Solex carb and won't work well with the 34pict3.
Likewise the 009 won't work well with the 34pict3.
Which leaves you with an SVDA as the only sensible choice.
At £45 delivered for an electronic SVDA from ebay, what could possibly go wrong? :D

Thank you all for the advice. I've actually got 2 decent vacuum only dizzys. They are alloy.
My engine code is AR but its not the original and its been rebuilt before i got it.
I've seen the e-bay new SVDA's but was worried about them being Chinese crap.
Would i be better off getting a 2nd hand Bosch VW one?

These Chinese crap one's are brilliant, but there's about 100 other threads saying this and even one about ten minutes ago, whoever started this Chinese crap stuff was actually talking crap themselves, I bought some Bosch plugs to day, made in India, my bosch plugs that came out were made in Brazil

I didn't say they WERE crap, i just said i was worried about them being crap. Buy crap buy twice and all that. And they look too good to be true which normally means they are. I try and research myself as much as possible, before posting, but didn't see the post from ten minutes ago.
