They didn't all start as panel vans.

    I didn't realise you'd gone "scooby" too!!

(see what I did there? Quite impressed with myself :D)

  5. I had all those items installed, but nobody ever physically checked the bus.
Maybe it was not such an important deal in those days.
I have removed the water tank and electric powered pump/water tap, before the resto. Now carry a plastic water container and a plastic washing up bowl instead, as we will mostly be camping in organised sites with all the facilities including electric hook up and not wild camping as we did in the UAE.

  7. This is a really interesting point, considering the changes that come into place at 12:00 tonight. So if my van is registered as a motor caravan, which it is, can I do 60 on a national speedlimit dual carriageway?

  8. I find that all this talk of driving at 60 mph (for any considerable distance) is academic in my case, as the old bus only has a 1600 tp motor, that will propel it downhill at 60 mph, but hills don't go on for ever, more is the pity.

  9. Indeed. I drive ours at 55 and just enjoy the time. I do know though that many of the type4 owners are more heavy with the right foot.

A well running 1600 is easily capable of 60 over long distances.

I used to have to get T5s changed on the V5 theses are the minimum requirements you have to have a letter from the company making the changes or confirming the work had been done with photos

    Minimum features

In order for a converted vehicle to qualify as a motor caravan it must have certain minimum features, as follows:

    •  a door that provides access to the living accommodation

    •  a bed, which has a minimum length of 1800mm or 6 feet. This can be converted from seats used

for other purposes during the day but must be permanently fixed within the body of the vehicle

    •  a water storage tank or container on, or in, the vehicle

    •  a seating and dining area, permanently attached to the vehicle. The table may be detachable but

must have some permanent means of attachment to the vehicle. It is not good enough to have a

      loose table

    •  a permanently fixed means of storage, a cupboard, locker or wardrobe

    •  a permanently fixed cooking facility within the vehicle, powered by gas or electricity

    •  at least one window on the side of the accommodation

If the vehicle has all of these features present, permanently fixed and installed properly, then it is a legal requirement to have it reclassified as a motor caravan on the V5C.

Is there any realistic chance of being caught exceeding the speed limit for a commercial vehicle in a VW T2 camper regardless of it being a converted van or a converted microbus.. As far s I believe, VW never made a camper so they are all converted from something .. none of which could exceed the max speed limits for commercials..

that would be 70 on a motorway Fat chance, 60 on a dual carriage way .. you might get close but no coconut.. and 50 on a single carriage way with a national speed limit .. well thats your average speed right there, so they aint gonna bust you for breaching that law ...

my v5 says panel van/ motor caravan converted by Devon conversions from new ...MOT says panel van as I dont think he read the V5 fully..

I think what you read applies more to the likes of modern Ford transits converted at home but still registered as vans .. and the story probably emanated from some dope exceeding the speed limit for there van ( commercial vehicle) and getting the hump.. Probably one person rightly busted for doing 65 in the nationals when they should have been doing 50... just like the wheezy old VWs..

  17. I think it is just that the penalties are higher for significantly exceeding the limit, such as 51 in a 30 zone, see http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-39686894

  18. As far as I can gather, if one has been able to persuade the DVLA to change the v5 to motorhome then the ordinary car speed limits apply.

I can go 60 without flogging my engine, and have touched 70 for short periods going downhill on the motorway. I'd think the chance of being pulled over must be vanishingly small - much more likely to be going too fast in a 30.

I have also read that the distinction on the v5 is lost when the vehicle reaches 40 anyway as the v5 reads heritage rather than private/light goods.

It didn't say anything about being caught for speeding, but I'm guessing that may well be what happened - police pulled over a converted van going 85 and then get the book out when they discover he's driving on motorhome insurance when the v5 says he's still a van.
