when is a bay a campervan according to the DVLA?

  1. According to a post on facebook, the police have been confiscating converted panelvans because the insurance documents do not match the v5 - presumably suggesting that the conversions have been made without informing the DVLA correctly of any changes.

So now I'm a bit worried and am checking my v5 and insurance documents. I insured with a specialist campervan insurer, the insurance says it is a campervan - I spent ages telling the insurer about it, what it had and didn't have etc. The v5 says it is a minibus, tax class: private/light goods. It clearly doesn't fit within the DVLA characteristics of a motorhome, see below.

Question: is this ok or do I need to change something with the DVLA?

  2. I honestly wouldn't bother. Telling the DVLA about anything is an uphill struggle.

I'd stop reading Facebook if I were you ;). It's not the best source of information.

  3. My log book says mine is a snow plow so I'm sure they will take mine away :)

  4. Agreed, it sounds like they're stopping much more recent vans than my 39 yr old late bay. And according to that DVLA doc, it isn't a motorhome..

  5. You've sorted the insurance, which is the important thing.

  6. Mine is registered as a campervan - I think a camper has to have a sink/cooker and a table.

  7. Mine's registered as a "motor caravan". I may start tarmacing peoples driveways...

  10. A van has to adhere to lower speed limits ....

  11. I can't see that the DVLA has a category for campervan - the term seems to be motorhome. I don't have permanent fixtures or a water tank, so it isn't one of those.

Mine's described by the insurer (in the associated bumph) as a 'Volkswagen Type'! There's only the Registration number on the Certificate.
The DVLA have it as a Volkswagen Transporter which is accurate.
In truth it's neither fish nor fowl having spent the majority of its life as a mini bus and only relatively recently having the seats removed and a R&R bed installed in their place. There's no sink.

  13. As far as I understand, insurance is cheaper if it is a motorhome so some with converted panelvans have been insuring them (wrongly) as motorhomes. I'm not sure what the police would say about mine, because the insurance docs just have it as a campervan, which isn't a category that appears to be recognised by the DVLA.

Of course, the complication is that AFAIU all t2s started as panelvans - but obviously there is some difference between those which were immediately converted to buses with windows and those which remained panelvans.

  14. I registered our bus in Truro in 1989, I declared it as a Motor Caravan and that's what they put on the V5.

  15. Do you have a water tank? permanent fixtures (tables, cooker etc)?

  16. Mine, originally a Microbus is registered as an MPV - I cheeked with the DVLA at length as I wanted to be able to swap between a"camper" and an eight seater - as a ex- policeman I'm pretty sure the force has better things to do than chase camper vans around checking their V5's against insurance docs - if the PNC or whatever it's called now says its MoT'ed, insured and your name is on the v5 I think it would be very odd to be pursued further. Just my opinion mind!!!!

    mines a motor carvan

if yours doesn't fit the dvla requirements for a camper(motor caravan) then i cant see a problem ,it does mean your speed limits are lower

i would be more worried about the insurance not matching and giving them a excuse for not paying out

  18. Right, I was also wondering about this - but then the insurance company had the details from the DVLA when I gave them all the details and I never said it was a motorhome or said anything about the stuff DVLA says it needs to have - so it would be pretty odd if they said that their description of "campervan" actually meant the DVLA category of "motorhome" and therefore the insurance wasn't valid.

  19. Have heard that if it was a panel van and still on register as that but converted to a campervan, the police can/have issued speeding tickets to these if caught exceeding the commercial speed limits.

I'm no expert on this matter by any stretch. but my understanding after reading copious posts on this very forum is that most of these vehicles would struggle to even reach the commercial speed limit let alone exceed them!!

    (Prepareing to be berated )
