@Day a dipstick sender in a type one works well for me. The temps posted by 77 westy are a good guide. What temperature your gauge reads will depend on loads of factors. Mine reads about 5c out (calibrated against boiling water and another thermometer). If you see the temperature go up past what it normally reads then you know something is up.
