whats it for?

eyup, i have a wire that comes off the top of my fuel tank, along under my bed foam and goes through a hole in the spare wheel well.. then just seems to disappear somewhere..
anyone know what its for? should probably have got a pic, but forgot. will do soon.

 

That doesn't sound very Volkswagen to me but more something someone has added.

Sender? Maybe they cut hole to replace sender unit, that didn't work so they replaced wire, but as they were doing it through the hole for the sender they couldn't run it any other way.
