What to do in traffic?

Tbe only risk is if you were hammering along at 70mph and then you stop suddenly in a queue.
It takes a while maybe 5 mins for the heat produced to balance out . People have had problems in queues because the engines were too hot before they slowed down.
The best thing to do in that situation is just increase the idle rpm in neutral with a little throttle pressure for a few minutes or if the oil light flickers.
Or drive at under 60mph expecting the queues.

  2. Get yourself a temperature gauge. You'll learn so much from one. Drove down to Bristol last Friday night. Motorway wasn't to bad. Steady 55mph. Oil reached is normal cruising temp. I then sat in heavy traffic. 1st gear stop, start for 3miles 40 minutes. Never got as hot as it had on the motorway!

  3. watch out for them double deckers they sneak up the inside

  5. Like the idea of yours and the temp probe, where did you take temp from? inside dip stick pipe? thanks

  6. Hi Izzybay , yes i just take the dip stick out and drop the temp probe into the dip stick pipe . Leave it until it reaches a max temp . Got mine off ebay , its got a longer probe that the usual ones at about a £5 from china . Tested it in a kettle and very accurate aswell ! LOL

  7. Great have just ordered one off ebay, hope its long enough, many thanks

You really want one with a long enough wire to reach the cab. By the time you have slowed down and found a place to stop your oil temperature may have fallen from the scary and risky heights.
Then it means you can back off before you cook it.

If you want to save over a VDO kit look at some of the type K thermometer sensors with 5 metre cables and the displays for type K you can get on eBay..

  9. What about this sort of thing?

  10. I agree , but for the time being i just wanted to check and get an idea of temps . I will be investing in guages when i can , for peace of mind .
