Am no expert but I had those symptoms with a blocked breather on the fuel tank...the giveaway was that it was under vacuum when taking the cap off.

I've read collapsing rubber fuel lines give the same symptoms....my dad had a label on the inside of the fuel tank of a beetle that would block the feed on occasion, but very randomly.

    Does it have a distributor?

Sounds like it could be breaking down. Sean_oc had a similar problem

  3. My brother found leaves in the tank doing a similar thing, once the sucking of fuel stops the leaves or (label) floats away and off you go again, oh how we laughed.............

  7. I had a load of this and couldn't find out why. It was the condenser in the end, a little piece of coiled up tin foil, getting too hot. Changed it Been great ever since.

My dads was a brand new Mk1 Golf bought from Ken Thorne Car Sales in City Road Cardiff in 1979...took months to diagnose.

  9. It's electric ignition apparently

Change it back to points and condenser and I bet it stops!

If it's accuspark or powerspark, it's defo worth trying points chap. I have had two customers break down in as many weeks due to Leccy module failure.

  16. Open the top hatch of the engine compartment . Reach in to the dizzy. Click the rear clip off the cap . Then open the rear hatch and click the front one off. (Stress free way) .you can do it from rear only but do it the way i mantion , loads easier . Remove cap . Remove rotor . Take picture ,or see the name. If you have another cap . Change it over. By placing the new on on the dizzy and one by one move them over. I dont like crapufire ignitions . Cheap junk . Go with a compufire the vacuum advance unit , i run compufire on my harley and bus , or the best way is a nice points system .for no guessing .

If you whip the dissy cap off, look at the black or red thing with wires going to it. They usually have a sticker on the side.

  18. Great when it`s running but just dies when it gets tired , only to fire up again when it cools down .
As said above , @SeanOC had the same issues in France . Flew out , replaced the module and we drove from Lyon to Techenders - no problem ...
I carry a spare module these days although you`d have more chance of a result with points ...

    Bon chance ...

  19. It doesn't matter what one is in there. If it's electronic then just change it out.
As @Lasty said I had this issue and it was sorted in about 20 minutes in the end, and that's only because I'd never done it before and so double checked everything!
The only flaw with electronic ignition on a Type 4 in my opinion is that the dizzy is on top of engine and so must get very hot. Electronics hate heat so a potential flaw.
However I still run an Accuspark in mine and it works fine. Yes you could have points and a condenser if you wanted one but the whole reason people moved to electronic ignition was the faff and reliability (or unreliability) of the old points setup.
