Evening all. We’re about embark on our longest ever road trip in our ‘79 Moonraker. Teesside (north-east) to St.Ives in Cornwall (440 miles) Making a few stops on our way there. Ive always had decent RAC cover. Just wondering what spares people carry in their van?
Fan belt, plugs, points, dizzy cap and leads, oil,Jack, good size tool kit,Wire, spade connectors. Is your vans engine all up together, before you start your journey? If so, everything will be ok…
Spare accelerator and clutch cables https://thelatebay.com/index.php?threads/roadside-toolkit-list.10212/
Coil for quick swap out, some fuel hose and a fuel filter, just in case Lots and lots of different sized tie-wraps!
2 x1l of oil... Fan belt, basic tools for performing basic tasks. If going further afield we'll carry points condenser, rotor, plugs, air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, rocker gaskets for in travel service. One of each wheel bearings, brake fluid, spare switch etc etc. but that's a bit extreme for most peeps... Don't get me started on what we carry in the T3...
Edit, were off on holiday this morning. Packed the bus yesterday, got a couple of hundred miles to get to our destination. Went to start up 20 minutes ago...nothing. Chip never not starts! After a tense 2 minutes I discovered I'd knocked one of the wires off the coil whilst changing the leisure battery. So, always carry a good attitude haha, these vehicles can use up one of them pretty quickly...
Fan/alternator belt, clutch and throttle cable, and enough tools to fit them, spare set of bulbs and 2ltr of oil (or it might be 1ltr), between the starter battery and rear light housing. All kept in the bus regardless of whether the trip is a few miles or 1,000+ miles.
Oil, torch, funnel, magnetic tray and err a bottle of car wash...who knew! Clicking and collecting...
Gert big lump hammer has got me home a couple of times. Being able to change gear without using the clutch is a good skill to have too
AA card, Oil and a fan belt will get you there. Bring us back a cheese and onion pasty from the little shop on the beach will ya...thanks
All of the above - timing gun, spare dissy, jack, spare nuts bolts washer set, wrench and socket set. I have never (touch wood ) used any of it on the van but have fixed loads of caravans and a people carrier when camping.
On scooter rallies in the 80's, mostly spent blind drunk, it was not unknown for people to sabotage their scooters to get a nice warm AA Relay home instead of riding home.
