What should the underside of my bus be painted with?

Discussion in 'Mech Tech' started by Fronkjunior, Sep 3, 2011.

  1. My bus is (still) in a workshop have rust surgery before painting. The underneath has been grit blasted to remove some old rubbery underseal that had been slapped on by some previous owner.

What should it be painted with now? I have read about POR15 but unsure exactly what it is and does. My renovation guy mentioed something about painting it with a zinc paint prior to it being waxoyled.

Any tips and your experiences appreciated please.

    Thanks

  3. it really does depend on how you will use the bus. sunny days and a show car then paint it.
i prefer the underseal option on a dry solid floor and it will then remain a dry solid floor. i dont care if its black underneath, i only see that when its up on a ramp

  4. I've found POR15 is very particular about surface preparation, if you dont follow the instructions to the letter it will fail and could peel off. You have to use all POR15's products - which means cleaning first with marine clean, then use POR15 metal ready then POR15 paint .....it gets a bit expensive. As it is cured by moisture if you paint it on a damp day it will fail and wont bond to the surface, even a drip of sweat into the paint tin can affect it. Your probably best using a heat gun on the areas your painting to drive off any moisture (after all the POR15 prep products)

If you can get it right POR15 is supposed to be good stuff - I've not had much luck with it though.

If you can get hold of propper red lead as Owen says - its good stuff. As its got lead in it it might be hard to get hold of now. There are lots of products that appear similar usually called red oxide - these are porus and should be top coated with a water proof paint.

Zinc primers are supposed to be pretty good but I've not used them my self so cant speak from experience.

I'd steer clear of hammerite or the sticky under seal with added waxoyl personally, as is can go hard and cracks after a while which will trap moisture against the metal.

I've used epoxy mastic 121 which I have found to be the best product for me availiable from rust buster, its used on oil rigs, marine stuff etc and its availible in several colours. They have a lot of good info on rust and protection on their web site too
