What modern van has the simplicity affordability and reliability that the vw bay window had when they were new? Bays sold all over the world and could tackle a drastic variation of enviroments and conditions They were affordable to buy easy to fix and very reliable when maintained Maintinance was easy and could be carried out with basic tools and knowledge Im wondering what the modern equivelent van is?
P90 tranait ive changed 2 engines before in the street. I bought a new transit in 06 and i couldnt do anythimg to It If they bought out a new old transit i would by it
Not western but still going strong The Russian UAZ 452 bread loaf http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UAZ-452
Imo , unless most maintenance can be done by non qualified/or over experienced owner in lay by outside house I reckon there isn"t one, suppose what made it clear for myself recently was when I tried to purchase a timing lamp/a brake hose clamp /some bus fuses from automotive parts/tools outlet only to find such items were no longer stocked cos no one wanted them anymore/no one does such work on their own vehicle.Tis the modern way, when me and bus part company its public transport /pushbike for this guy.(and sad face!)
I got lauhed at and the other staff brought out of the office to laugh at me when i asked for the best price on a timing lamp at my local motor factors
We live in a someone else will fix it or chuck it away society nowadays To be honest theres not many people remotly interested in fixing there own vehicles they are just modes of transport and sometimes a show of status I think basic maintainance of a vehicle should be part of the driving test A lot of modern cars dont even carry a spare wheel
Halfords sell timing lamps - in amongst the tents roofracks etc they still sell timing lamps. I have one and haven't used it in 20 years - most cars have electronic ignition, crank sensors etc - its not that people are unwilling to use them, its that there is no need, you just ask the computer which sensor is faulty and replace it.
Halfords is a strange place Mostly useless but once in a while you get a gem of a fella working in there
Going back to the original question - there is no van that would pass emission tests in the 'developed world' with all the paraphernalia that that involves, yet be simple and cheap enough to sell in the 3rd world. Like cars, the Type 2 was a world vehicle in a time before all the legislation.
