What do they put in modern fuel?

  1. Following on from this thread,

    Its MASKING TAPE.....

    thus (in situ)

    and out

In the 'in tank' picture, top left is the outlet, with a 1" bit of tape floating near it. Can hook this bit? No, of course not....

After suffering from fuel starvation last week end, I even swapped a fuel filter on the side of the A12 (thanks to everyone who beeped me when I was under the van with my legs sticking out - that really helped (not)), which made no odds, and now I know why.

Explains also, why my petrol had what looked like 'man gravy' floating in it too - glue from the tape.

Still, once I have the last inch of tape out, I'll not need to pull the tank, so could be worse...

  2. Well spotted

  3. ....how did that get in there?

  4. I should imagine that someone stuffed it in the filler pipe when some painting was getting done o_O and it fell in!!

I've seen all sorts of masking solutions when it comes to the fuel filler o_O

  5. Don't you think the leopardskin fuel tank is a bit...tarty? Or was your bus made in Essex?

  6. That'll be the ethanol in the fuel doing that!! :(

  7. I'll be asking the paint shop the very same question.....

As for ' Don't you think the leopardskin fuel tank is a bit...tarty? Or was your bus made in Essex?' - leopardskin is definately in!!

Anyway, I have a feeling it was the last 1" of masking tape that kept floating over the fuel out let and causing my issues, as 6 tanks of fuel and 4 filters has seen off most of the crud.
Also, every time it cut out, pulling over and repriming the carbs sorted it. However I managed to float the little bugger out of site and reach.

Cue a cheap USB endoscope of ebay, laptop and extra light ( I did test looking at a part can of petrol, to ensure I wasn't going to have a nice bonfire)

This was after the event, so I took the opportunity to recheck my breathers, which are doing fine , as you can see on the laptop.

Here is my other new favourite tool - £2.50 grabber from machine mart. Don't go fishing in your tank without one:

To be honest, a mirror would of been just as good, and somewhat less risky....

  8. Excellent thread olnow, my bus had same issues as yours, but after filter and carb swap has been running well (fingers crossed). If she plays up again i will check out my tank.

  9. nice work
