In the engine bay should the firewall be painted black or the same colour as the engine Bay paint? I say black (as original?) but my resto guy says the same as body and engine bay will look better and will show the newly painted black tins off better. What do you think and is black what would have come from the factory in 1972?
Pinched from Ratwell... "The dashboard, pedals, shifter, seats frame and gravel guard are L43 Grey Black. All of the grey items in the engine compartment (firewall, intake manifolds, fuel filler pipe, engine access hatch) as well as the fresh air vents and the tops of the underbody pans are L249 Dove Grey. Engine tin and valve covers were painted L41 Black (often called VW Black). The black was a 60 degree gloss."
I did the inlet manifold, firewall and the metal thingys above the engine all in Dove Grey. Took our local paint bloke ages to find it but he got there in the end
Ah so that explains a lot. I've always assumed my firewall and hatch cover were replaced but are still in primer. So here's a supplementary question. My hatch cover and also the piece of dark yellow carpet that goes above it have the code L-LT-665 handwritten on them. Does anybody know what this means?
It looks very simmaler to the stonleigh grey im using on my tinware and fuel tank Pauls painting my firewall and the steel sheets that hold my insulation up the same colour as the bus As i want the engine tin to contrast against a background thats all the same colour
