The stuff you buy at the range etc is absolute crud. I have been trying to get a good weedkiller for ages now and seem to have trouble finding good old DDT -- Can anyone recommend a good alternative that is readily available without going on the Russian black market?

It's for the front Barn, they can't get out there and I just want something that will keep the new drive weed free. Tried weeding by hand for the past three years and the weeds won, So now it is all shiny and new I want to beat the little sods before they start breeding and send me in a downward spiral of mental weed anguish ala Jasper Carrot and the mole.

I see enough earth ta brother Steve. I have a garden the size of Kew -- Not really, it just seems that big when weeding and maintaining it!:(

  14. DON'T DUMP FOSSIL FUELS ON THE GROUND! GUHHH! (Where the hell's the emoticon that's ripping his hair out in frustration?)
    Oh my ulcer.
Vinegar works but it takes several applications to wipe the slate clean,.. as it were.
I prefer RoundUp. Buy the one for trees and shrubbery. It's double strength. Better yet, buy the small concentrated bottle and mix it double strength for weeds. Prolly cheaper that way.
RoundUp is absorbed thru the leaves, so DON'T whack it all down before you spray. The more lush foliage there is, the more poison will be carried to the root system.
RoundUp also neutralizes instantly on contact with soil, unlike DIESEL!!!
Caustic soda (or lye), surprisingly becomes safe when it hits dirt too, but it will burn like a sumbitch if it gets on you first.
I have found cheap RoundUp knock-off brands work just as well as the real McCoy by the way. Might be the same stuff. I never looked.
There are also chemical defoliants that keep the ground sterile for up to a year, but I have not yet read about it's long-term environmental impact.
Once all is dead, just spread a pre-emergent herbicide, such as Preen or corn meal gluten. They prevent fallen seeds from germinating for up to a year.
Good luck and try to be environmentally conscious, please.

  15. Worked with a guy at shell research who told me off the record that alot of brands have promotors in them , logical id say else they would do themselves out of business in the end if they worked fullstop init.

  16. Also, once the area is clear, you could always plant a dense ornamental ground cover that will choke everything else out and look good doing it.
Ajuga is a good one. It's only about 3 inches tall, has purple/bronze foliage and purple flowers.
Ribbon grass is one of my favorites for filling in areas I don't want to deal with. It's a variegated grass. It's about 2ft. tall but it's very pretty.
Once these types of plants fill the area in it will be maintenance-free until the second the second coming of Christ. Maybe longer.

  17. Glypsophate - it's a Bayer product you can buy from B&Q.
It will slaughter all before it.
Comes in sachets that you mix with water.
I mix it up double strength.
The black berry that I soaked in it last autumn turned black...
and has recently blown away as a fine black dust in the strong winds.

This thread is all a bit tongue in cheek bw,;)

  20. I know some people would be kidding about diesel, but one never knows.
How tongue-in-cheek are we talkin? Were you really looking for a weed killer or is this ALL just a joke?
Wait a minute. It's still freezing cold where you are, isn't it?
    I give up.
