Our starter motor is playing up and think likely electric issue or starter issue (starter motor keeps spinning after ignition turned off and not starting the engine anyway). Going to call out breakdown services tomorrow but does anyone know any good VW mechanics in this region near Rothenburg?
I’m 2 hours away . In regensburg. If you need a mechanic.im pro level . I have a place with tools. You can hang out if you want. You could Push start it . And lots of hills along the way to stop and go. I could pull your starter and rebuild it for you.if you need that.I just did mine a few weeks ago actually..And it’s not about the money. And it’s a beautiful town.Nobody visits me. .They filmed Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. In Rothenburg,. There is a mechanic roaming around the streets. If you see him he could help you. He looks like this.by the way His other job is catching children. Nice guy.. .
I've called out the breakdown cover to take a look first. 2 hours might be a stretch for recovery vehicle to tow us. Had thought about push starting for rest of the trip but not that easy with wife and children on board, and need to get sorted for ferry and gas stations. Thanks for the offer though... Will see how things pan out.
Understood. If you get under there with half a can of WD-40. And spray the hell out of it and then , wait a little while that might work for you. . That’s what I would try first. But with the wife and kids it seems like you’re on a different type of mission .
It's a new starter motor installed a few weeks ago so might be faulty. When it was starting I think the starter motor kept spinning for a few seconds extra before disengaging - it made a funny whirring noise for a few seconds but it stopped and thought nothing of it at the time. Recovery driver tried attaching his jump start battery and turned over and same thing with it continuing to soon starter without key in ignition. What was interesting was it seemed to lose power quite quickly and stopped itself after about 5 seconds of spinning so not sure why it would do that with strong battery attached. Local VW workshop garage not got space so on the move now to another garage.
Got mechanics looking at it now in VW centre out in a small village. They have it started but next to work out why starter sticking on. Might well be ignition switch, but think we're in good hands. Very friendly workshop owner here looking after the family which is in contrast to the Rothenburg place which turfed us out. Thanks for your suggestions - have some WD40 in the bus for back up and multiple uses... Will add starter spraying to it's use cases!
Ignition switch could be playing up? Ive had to changed mine twice in 18 months....... I'm 12hrs away from changing it to a push button switch, but I don't really want to do it. Does anyone knows of any trouble free ignition switches that could save the bays day?
I use a heavy duty momentary switch which I bought from guitar supplier. I do not use the key Start any more. I trained myself To use the push button. The normal ignition turn switch works fine. But after changing them twice. I decided to install the pushbutton. It’s really no hassle once you get used to it actually. Turn the key. Push the button. And it’s also very handy when I want to do the timing. Or turn over the engine without the ignition being live.I have an extra one if you need it I can post it to you in Germany takes one day. I can send you the photos of how it’s wired up quite simple actually
Thanks very much for your feedback dubsurftone, sounds like you've been having the same trouble as me. I don't know why they keep failing? is it because of the constant use or poor quality part? (probably both hey) Thank you for the offer to post the part (Swansea based) I appreciate that! I went out this morning and bought a Durite switch push button https://www.durite.co.uk/itm/Push-B...k-Momentary-On-Push-Switch-125A-at-12V/048500 This should fit nicely in the dash next to the light switch (there's a blank orifice behind). I'll try and send a picture once complete. Thanks buddy
