Viking owners - roof liner question!

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Dicky, Sep 3, 2013.

  1. Ive mentioned this before but I was looking into thermal covers for the pop top canvas and expensive they are!

As I currently use picnic type blankets with the waterproof back to provide a condensation barrier inside I thought of having a liner made from the same material used for Tent carpets. Like the Khyam stuff with the foil back. The idea is it would clip (poppers) onto where the canvas meets the pop top, have clips to clip onto the chrome canvas bar and then popper onto the slide out parts of the bed. Ends would be attached at the corners on the angled bit and then could have a velcro flap to attach to the vertical part of the canvas and possibly poppers onto the bed part or velcro.

The idea is to provide some thermal resistance, reduce condensation and channel any condensation that did occur away from the beds. and provide some black out for those brighter mornings. A roll up or velcro flap for the window could be added! I dont believe this will be overly bulky and with a few tweeks might be able to stay in situ when the roof comes down.

I may have found someone to manufacture one for me but it would be useful to canvas (no pun intended) you guys on this. All thoughts gratefully recieved.

  2. Mock up using Khyam carpet. The ends would just velcro on! Thoughts? IMG-20130903-00225.jpg

  3. i don't know that roof type but if there's metal to attach to, magnets might be useful rather than fiddling with poppers?

  4. that might be a good call for the middle bar! ta

  5. No-one interested in contributing - this should more or less end all that condensation on the vinyl and the wet bedding (as opposed to bed wetting).

Ive done a brief design and priced it. just awaiting some material samples.

  6. I tried a similar thing with the bubble wrap foil stuff and clipped it on it worked ok until one off the boys rolled against it and pulled it off and woke up with it on him.
I found the best way was to popper it onto the top off the roof and feed it under the fold out metal bar that goes across the roof and tuck under the slideie out bits off wood.

  7. I'd be interested in one. Price pending of course

  8. Im not intending to flog em just dont want to spend my cash and then think of something ive overlooked but if it works I wont be keeping it a secret. When I got a price for a pucer cover which does seem to be a good piee of kit it was well over 200 notes for a viking as its so much bigger and more complex than most other tops. memory could be failing me but I think it was about 280 and they arent small to transport. I dont think what Im doing can compete with claimed insulation value of Darrens kit but mines intended to do a similar job but not look quite as outlandish and actually make it a littel comfier up in the roof and hopefully not take room up to transport.

  9. Interesting thread mate. My van is at proud to pop as we speak getting the roof fixed and the canvas replaced. I've been told there work is awesome but ill soon find out I guess. Going back to the subject, it would be good to see how you get on with this.

  10. Interesting indeed - why not see what their covers are like. The price seems in the ball park. dont know if they have made any viking ones as yet. also be interested to see how big they are when packed (rolled up)

  11. Wouldn't it be better to have the insulation on the inside to keep any heat generated inside of the van, inside. Can't see the silver foil stuff being much off a heat saver on the outside, only acting as a extra barrier to reduce condensation on the inside.
That's the main reason I lined inside up top where the boys slept for the condensation barrier and it sort off worked.

  12. If Im honest Im not sure but my thought process was similar to yours. Plus it should be easier to fit. At the moment im iro £160 to have made but my design might be too elabourate!

Looks like an a good idea. Is condensation a problem in the roof then?
Icepug I'd be really interested to see the pics of your new roof. When I looked I couldn't see a Superviking roof option.
    Cheers

  14. Mine used to condensate up a lot, but then there was 2 adults in the van and 2 children up in the roof sleeping.
the one who slept next to the plastic bit used to have a wet duvet in the mornings from the condensation.

  15. Watching with interest Dicky.

  16. It can be. Out of summer it gets a bit damp. Ive cut a rooflight into mine and that improved it a bit.

  17. Ditto that. We started using the waterproof picnic blankets for that very reason. Also makes the bed over the door more useable as thats the worst one. At the ends its just the bottom of the duet or whatever but the side one its all the full length of the bed.

  18. Mine tends to collect in the canvas under the side bunk over the door. Will be interested to see how you progress - we are still flirting with a change of canvas and going for bespoke vents either end like the big Westy windows. Might still be another year or so off that thanks to the 3 engines/ 3 alternator impact on wallet this year :-(

  19. My window seam leaked when it rained and puddles off water collected inside the pull out bit so I skewered a few holes on the underside to let it drain out.
